FARM HOUSING PROGRAM LAUNCHED IN THIS COUNTY The farm housing program, au thorized by recent act of Congress, has been launched in McDowell county. Applications for loans to build or repair farm houses' and other farm buildings are being re ceived at the Farmers Home Ad ministration county office at Mar ion, according to James E. McCall, FHA County Supei-visor. Loans may run for a maximum of 33 years, a 4 per cent interest, and can be made to farm owners who cannot obtain farm housing loans from their banks or other sources, McCall said. Owners who qualify can also get loans for improving their tenants. All loans are subject to approval by the local three-mem ber FHA County Committee. The! Housing Act provides for a four-, year period of loan making. The! appropriation for the current year j is $27,000,000 for the entire coun- i try, which will mean about five' loans per agricultural county at an j esthnated of $2,200 per loan. The| authorized Congressional appropri ation for the four years is $275, 000,000. Veterans will receive pre ference. McCall predicted that most loans j will go to farmers with farm earn-1 ings and other income enough to j repay the loan plus interest without! further help from the Government, j He expects most loans will be for repairs and remodeling rather than j for new construction. A loan may also be made to a j farm owner whotee income is not i now considered adequate to repay j the loan on schedule, if his income j can be made sufficient by enlarg- j ing or developing his farm and by! improving his farm enterprises. If the owner follows a previously agreed upon plan for making need ed revisions, the Government will help him on his payments if neces sary during the first five years. Loans may also be made to elimi nate hazards to a family's health and safety. With borrowers need ing this type of assistance, it will j be possible to include up to $5001 of the $1,000 total in the form of j a grant. In this connection, McCall j said the appropriation included j $2,000,000 for grants and farm en-1 largement and development loans. J Wheat stocks in all positions in! BECAUSE It la The Key To All Your Future Benefits AFTER BENEFITS BEGIN Every person receiving either Federal old-age or survivors insur ance payments is required to report certain events which may suspend or stop payments. Any person receiving a monthly insurance payment who works un der Social Security and earns as much as $15 is required to notify the Social Security Administration. His payment is suspended for the month in which he (or she) works. I Work that is not covered by Fed j eral old-age and survivors insurance I does not affect the payments. A i retired worker, or a young wido^ i receiving payments, may operate a business or do domestic or agricul | tural work without suspending the ; monthly insurance payments, j Of course, income from sources other than employment does not ef j feet the right to receive those pay j ments. Payments to a wife will stop if she is divorced from her husband, and payments to a widow, young or old, will be stopped if she remarri es. Notice, however, that if a wid ow remarries and her payment is stopped, the payments for the chil dren may continue. A child's payment is suspended if he works and stopped entirely if he is adopted by someone outside his immediate family. A child's payment will also be stopped if he or she maiTies. Similar restrictions are imposed on dependent parents receiving j monthly insurance payments. This is the sixth in a series of ar ticles on your Social Security. In our next issue we will discuss "your Social Security Card."
