Social News Mrs. Clyde Cannon, Editor Phone 434-M Martha Pettigrew D.A.R. Meets At Cross Home On Wednesday The Martha Pettigrew Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution met Wednesday after noon of last week at the home of Mrs. S. R. Cross on the Air Port Road. Mrs. R. J. Noyes, Vice Regent, presided at the meeting during the absence of Mrs. W. "W. Neal, Sr., Regent. Mrs. W. R. Chambers led the group in opening the meet ing giving the American Creed, followed by Mrs. W. B. Noyes leading the pledge of ellegiance to the flag. Mrs. B. F. Pollard, gave a most insiring special Christmas devo tional. During the business session of meeting the Chapter voted to shower their Becker child, Gertie Hicks, a student at Crossnore School, with gifts for Christmas. A letter was read from Mrs. Eugene Holcombe, chairman of the Building Fund Promotion Committee, stat ing that the Martha Pettigrew Chapter had been placed on the honor roll for contributing six dol lars per member toward the Na tional building program, now un- i der way in Washington, D. C. The Chapter also voted to send money to the amount of $20 to the j Veteran's hospital at Swannanoa, | through Mrs. J. F. Snipes, for the Red Cross fund. Following the transaction of business Mrs. S. R. Cross, program chairman, presented Mrs. Carl W. McMurray who sang "Some where in France" by Hartman, in keeping with the date of Decem ber 7. Miss Mary Lou Beaman was also presented by Mrs. Cross and played two piano solos by Rozychi. The entire chapter was led by Mrs. McMurray in singing four Christmas Carols, accompanied by Mary Lou Beaman at the piano. The hostess served a delicious tea course with aecesosries to the following Chapter members and Miss Mary Lou Beaman: Mrs. R. J. No^es, Mrs J. F. Jonas, Mrs. J. E. Evans, Mrs. W. B. Noyes, Mrs. J. M. Bridge Club Mee^s With Mrs. Sam Yancey Mrs. Sam Yancey was a charm ing hostess on Tuesday evening, with a dessert bridge party to hon or members of her bridge club and several visitors to the club. The home was beautifully decor ated with festive Christmas ar rangements, and scenes, to form a lovely background for individual tables set up and appointed for the serving of a sweet course, with ac cessories, upon arrival of the guests Following the dessert course two tables of bridge were enjoyed and at the close of play Mrs. David Blanton received high score club prize and Mrs. B. A. Dickson was winner of high score for the vis itors. The guest list included Mrs. George Rowe, Mrs. David Blanton, Mrs. J. E. Neal, Jr., and Mrs. Car ter Hudgins, club members, and Mrs. D. M. Mcintosh, Jr., Mrs. Al bert Neal, Mrs. B. A. Dickson and Mrs. Oliver Cross, visitors. Wesleyan Guild Has Meeting On Monday The Wesleyan Service Guild of First Methodist church held its regular December meeting and an nual Christmas party Monday eve ning in the church hut. The hut was decorated in keep ing with the holiday season with holly and lighted tapers. Mrs. Arnold Pyatt, presisdent, presided during the business session and a number of items were taken care of. The group voted to donate $125.00 toward the building fund for the new educational building and to investigate and help a boy i formerly under the care of the ! Guild. A financial report on the ! Guild activities was read by Mrs. Pyatt. Several members of the group, in costume representating various | countries presented a program on | the missionary theme and to help ! explain where the funds realized 'from the Week of Prayer are used. J Those taking parts were: Mrs. D. | R Peeler, Mrs. Karl Brown, Mrs. ! Theodore Watkins, Mrs. Carson Py jatt, Mrs. N. F. Steppe, Jr., and Mrs. | Fred Bolick. Mrs. H. G. Mangum presented the devotional, using the Christmas story and carols were sung by the group with Mrs. R. K. Davis at the piano. Following the program the group joined in games and contests and gifts were exchanged from the gift table. The folowing hostesses served refreshments, carrying out the j Christmas motif: Mrs. H. C. Man jgum, Miss Mamie Goforth, Mrs. jFred Bolick, Mrs. Bruce Gibbs and I Mrs. A. T. Ledbetter. -o Sunday School Class Holds Yule Party The Sally Henderson Sunday School Class of First Baptist chur ch held an annual Christmas party last Friday evening in the recrea tional room of the church. The room was decorated for the party in keeping with the holiday season. Festivie arrangements of Christmas greens, candles and a tree were used. Mrs. Molly Bur nette, the executive committee of the class and the group captains were in charge of arrangements. 20 members of the class enjoyed j games, and contests and sang I Christmas carols. White gifts were ! brought by each member and auc tioned off with the funds to be us ; ed by the class and the gifts to ! be turned over to an indigent fam jily for Christmas. Refreshments of Russian tea, ; cake, nuts, sandwiches and candy were served while carols were play ed by Mrs. Luther Skagg on her record-player. Mrs. John Tyler and Mrs. Rich [ ard Atwell are the class teachers. Garden Club Holds Meeting And Party Members of the Marion Garden Club enjoyed a delightful Christ mas meeting and party Tuesday evening when Mrs. W. S. Shiflet and Miss Jean Maxwell were hos tesses to the club at the Shiflet home on North Madison street. Each year at this meeting the members invite their husbands and other guests. A total of 22 club members, their husbands and four additional guests, Dr. C. W. Ms Murray, Mrs. B. F. Pollard, Mrs. Fred Brooks and Fulton Glenn, of j Asheville, were present. The home was lovely with ar i rangements of greenery, seasonal | berries, tapers and Christmas scen j es beautifully arranged to form a j very effective background for the I meeting. | Mrs. R. E. McCall, president, j presided during the meeting and i presented Reverend James B. Mc j Larty who conducted the devotion al, using the Chi'istmas story from j the book of Luke for his theme. Roll call was made and the min I utes read by Mrs. I. A. McLain, se I cret&ry. A substantial amount of | fruit and candy was donated by i the members to be sent to the ! Home for the Aged. i Mrs. W. Mc i Murray, Reverend James B. Mc Larty, Mrs. John Hoyle, Jr., Mrs. I. A. McLain and Mrs. J. L. Gour ley, Sr., Mrs. Fred Brooks gave a humer ! ous reading "Christmas at the ; Peasleys", followed by the entire igroup singing Christmas carols with Mrs. R. I. Corbett at the pi ano. j Several Christmas arrangements ■were judged with prizes go ing to the following: Mrs. J. H. Tate, the blue ribbon for the front | door arrangement. Mrs. James B. ! McLarty, for the arrangement of ;the Nativity Scene, received se | cond prize and Mrs. W. S, Shiflet | received third prize for her "Sug gestions for Christmas". Fourth prizes went to Mrs. C. L. Self and i Mrs. W. F. Grant, Sr., for their 1 nut bowl arrangements. Refreshments were served buf fet style by the hostesses with Mrs. R. E. McCall pouring coffee. A de lightful sweet course in keeping with the holiday season was enjoy ed. Favors of miniature Christmas bells were presented the ladies pre sent with the gentlemen receiving j miniature candy canes. Legion Auxiliary Has Regular Meeting The American Legion Auxiliary met in the Legion room of the community building Tuesday eve ning for the regular December I meeting. j Miss Opal Epley, president, pre : sided over the meeting with 10 | members present. Mrs. Arnold Morgan, color guard j advanced the colors, followed by the pledge of allegiance to the flag | and the preamble to the Constitu j tion, Mrs. W. E. Cooper, Chaplain, led the prayer for the evening. Mrs. Horace Norton, secretary pro tem during the illness of Mrs. Ray Brown, secretary, read letters from headquarters requesting a drive for members in the local un it and thank you notes from sev eral patients at the veterans hos pital at Swannanoa who received sweatei-s from the Auxiliary. Plans were made to join the Leg ion in caring for seven needy fam ilies at Christmas and for sponsor ing a New Years party. Following the meeting refresh ments were served the Legion and the Auxiliary in the auditorium by the following hostesses: Mrs. Ar nold Morgan, Mrs. W. E. Cooper and Mrs. Sula Miller. Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Pyatt and two children, Arnold and Mar garet Ann, have moved to their lovely new home on Rutherford Road from a house owned by John Finley on Park Avenue. Mr. and Mrs. fiernard Hirsch plan to move to the residence vacated by the Pyatts in the near future. Mrs. Judson L. Powers, Jr., stu dent at Virginia State Teacher's College, Farmville, Virginia, will arrive in Marion this week-end to spend the Christmas holidays with her mother Mrs. Ann Hawkins. N. C. State College students who will spend the Christmas holidays at their homes in Marion begin ning December 16 include Maurice Atwell, John Poteat, Sam Home wood, John Beaman, John Laugh ridge, Bruce McNeal, and Dean Morgan. Ouzts has returned to her home here after a visit with relatives in Jackson, Mississippi, and other points. o The condition of Mrs. E. L. Tate, who is seriously ill at her home in Nebo was reported Wednesday as being unchanged. o Mrs. Winslow Ballew was a pa tient at Presbyterian Hospital, Charlotte, on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of last week. <3 Miss Mary Thornburg, third grade teacher at Central School will spend the Christmas holidays at her home in Dallas, N. Adeline Neal will arrive in Mar ion Friday from Saint Mary's Aca demy, Raleigh, to spend the holi days with her parents Mr. and Mrs. Grayson Neal. Lt. Homer Walker, U. S. Army, who stationed at Fort Ord, Califor nia, will arrive December 20 to spend a 30 day furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. I. L.
