'Bo we shall have to content our Isoif with a brief outline. We did not arrive on the grounds until Tuesday morning and were denied the pleasure of hearing the annual sermon b.v Rev. J. E. White, of Wibori, also the Monday night exercises; but we heard many favorable com ments both as to the sermon and the exercises. Tuesday at 11 o'clock, a m , a large assembly of people were gathered in the grave aud soon a class composed of twenty live or thirty young ladies and a goodly number of young men, led by Prof. Cnrrie, sang very beautifully "Tis Morn." Dr. Law then introduced Prof. W.S.Curre!', of Davidson Col lege, who had been chosen to de liver the literary address. Dr. Correll took for his subject "Oflenes.-s of Purpose," or a pur pose in life and for an hour and a half held las audience spell bound. II is arguments were convincing his illustrations apt, his periods rounded and his lauguag beauti ful iu a word his address was a gem. After the address dinner was declared in order, and from t ho number of pressing invitations we rsceived we almost began toimag iue that dinner grew on every bush aboDt the academy. At 3 o'clock p. i. che services ol Dr. Law were again called for and he introduced to the reassembled audience Capt. E. W. Kerr, of Clinton. The introduction was preceded by an instrumental solo entitled "Jesus Lover of my Soul," eeutifullv rendered by Miss S. II. Gay. Capt. Kerr did not men tion the subject of his address, bat. said he had thrown away what he tad prepare j and proposed to talk to the school in a practical wa , and we are sure that eveer one present did not only enjoy but was instructed by his remarks. His tribute to women and the Coined erate dead was truly ehxiucut ami touching. At 8 o'clock at night a very arge crowd assembled in the academy to hear the exercises b the pupils, all of which exercises were carried oat with snou com pleteness that to mention auv sin gle one would be uufair and we find it impossible to mention all. At the close of Dr. Cunell's ad - dress Miss SudieU. Gay rendered an instrumental solo, "Old Folks at Home," that was greatly ad mired. Without wishing to depreciate in the Least the wtll-earned repu tation of Prof. McArthur, we cau out feel that much credit is due his sister, Miss McArthur, for the well trained piimary classes, and also Miss Sudie Gay, music teach er, whose efficieut work was so virible in the almost perfect ren ditiob of every piece by her pu pils. Prof. McArthur aud his ac complished assistants may feel ptoud of their noble work, aud ev ery scholar of this excellent insti tution should rejoice at t he perfec tion they have attained. The commencement of Lumber Bridge High School was a grand Al' x Clifton Shaw, f)f Iiock:nham, to a Chief of Div'sion in the lute rior Department with a salary ol $2,003. The news that the decision ol Attorney General Olney renders the Sunday peaing of the World's Fir impracticable, and that the gatea were closed Sunday last will be hailed with delight by many readrs of the CiiiKF. OLD FORK FRAGMENS. Your last Ckikf containing an extract from the Raleigh News and Observer in regard to the lady who n;se from the dead, rdlled tomy mind an incident of a similar nature related by my grandmother, a very aged lady, many years ago, aud except the d.lftrence in names the stoiy 6eems almost identical.
