SUBSCRIPTION RAT MS: . ::c vear, ro- k months, nee months Terms, cash in advance. 5- 1 Wi;inksY, Nov. 21', 1803. The quest iti of the re-establish meat of State banks of issuo is .re which is attracting a good (U a! of discussion in the South s.t rhis time, and those who favor the proposition are of course anxious lV.r a repeal of tho 10 per cent, tax on State banks of circulation. It i argued that the State banks would furnish a local curiency which would remain at home and furnish acconiinodaiiun to the farmers and laboring people who cannot bori aw money from the natiot:al banks lor the. reason that they have no security to oiler save laud. The Chicago platform promises to iepea) the 10 per cent, tax on State banks and give the people the relief tLat the country stands in need of. The Democratic party cannot go back on this solemn pledge without imperiling its suc cess in the future. Of course we want tnoie money, but we want the money we already have where we can get hold of it. A bill shoud be. introduced into the next Congrees to tax incomes. A bill was introduced into the olst Congress, we think it was, to tax incomes, the proposition being to raise Slo0,000,00y from the sal aries of rich men and reducing the tariff which oppresses the poor. By taxing incomes England has he?n en tbled to sustain o;ie of tho most expensive of governments. By th:s process of taxation the rich man u made to bear his share pi" the goveriai.ental bur dens. In America the poor whose "n comes do not meet I heir sc-iuty ex penses, have to car: y the burdens of the government. Every man, according to divine law, is respon sible in proportion to his ability to do. The whole tioubtt- its Ameri cau government is thisla.v is v.o lated. It is the greatest of our abuses, and the consequence is that a few men are gradually get ting possession of all wealth. With a reasonable reduction of the tariff, the moderate taking ot large incomes, a farther halt in federal pensions, the farmers aud the poor who have characltr and industiy ought to come up rap idly. z- Dr. Pr it chard h.-ts begun a se ries cf articles in tho Biblical Re corder on the higher education ol women aud the coeducation of the sexes. Wo see no reason in thewoild why this ia not practical, aud we would rejoice to see the denominational colleges of the State throw open their doors to the you .g ladies who are denied .the thorough course these colleges older. In'o female college south of the Mason and Dixon line, is do ing anything like the thorough verk of our male colleges in iNortu Carolina and our guls are entitled, at least, to advantages equal to our boys. We heart ly endorse the advanced position ta ken by Dr. l'ritchatd, and we hope his articles may lead to practical action. Lauriuburg Exchange. At.d we desire to add that we would rejoice to see the Universi ty throw open its doors to the young ladies. It stands at the head of our highei institutions of learning aud the full benefits of its facilities should be offered to them. Tho young ladies are evi dently knocking at its doois and to tleny tbetn entrance is to hold to the old exploded theory that they are uieutally inferior to the young men. Harvard has thrown its doors open to the women. That institu tion lunv has L'GO feu-.ale students. They pursue the s;nuo studies, have the same teachers and pass tne same examination as the young men at Harvard. TUey are denied the right of degrees and .diplomas, but that makes little difference when the brain has been rightly polished. Look out for the higher educa tion of women aud the coeduca tion of the sexes. Journal of Legislature of 1780.
