S. Senator Clyde R. Hoey receiving a gift of a carton of Cavalier cigarettes, the new brand now being put on the market by Reynolds. The presentation is being made by a smiling man dressed in fancy costume to resemble the figure of the Cavalier on the package. , , , , The caption sent along with the photograph . says. “Senator. Hoey ‘meets,’ in the nation’s capital, a distinctive uroduct of North Carolina. 1 ’ What the Reynolds publicity man did not say was that, though Senator Hoey received the cigarettes, he would not use them. For, Senator Hoey does not smoke. No doubt he gave the Cavaliers to members of his office staff; maybe he gave some of them' to fellow Senators. So far as I know, nothing has been sent out by the Rey nolds publicity department about a gift of Cavaliers to Mr. Hoey’s colleague, U. S. Senator Frank P. Graham. But surely he must have got a carton too- It would be a most flagrant display of favoritism for one Senator from the State to get a gift of Cavaliers and the other not. If I find out this was the case, I am going to send to Chairman of the Board James A. Gray a protest against the Senator from Chapel Hill’s being slighted. If Senator Graham did get a carton of Cavaliers, he, like Senator Hoey, passed them bn to somebody else', for he also does not smoke. I have not inquired into the subject and cannot speak from knowledge, but I’ll bet there is not another State in the Union both of whose Senators are non-smokers, and these two non-smoking Senators represent the State which leads all others in both tobacco growing and tobacco manu facturing! What a frightful blow it would be to the State’s whole financial structure if other people did not give any more support to North Carolina’s chief branch of agriculture and chief industry than our two Senators do! And there come to mind two other prominent North Carolinians, citi zens of Chapel Hill, who do not smoke: Acting President of the University William D. Carmichael, Jr., and Chair man of the Trustees’ Building Committee Collier Cobb Jr. (You can add to the roll of non-smoking North Caro linians Attorney General Harry McMullan and myself; but we used up a lot of tobacco before we quit smoking several . years ago and so can claim that we have done our share as supporters of North Carolina’s agriculture and industry.) —By Louis Graves—Chapel Hill Weekly. ^^Mr^V ^eMaM^ 1 Frigidaire's exclusive Live- See These Other Features, Too! • All-porcelain inside and out • Loads from the top • Put it anywhere; no bolting down • Clog-Proof Water Pump • Underwater Suds Distributor ing, penetrating currents of hot. sudsy water that wash '’MiG’ clothes through and through with no pulling or yanking;-y Clothes are in water all the time — not half-in, half-cut; ^ And the same Live-Water action that washes clothes ” cleaner, rinses them twice in fresh, clean water; See a demonstration of Live- Water action; There’s noth" ing else like it!
