BURKE. &- CUNNINtrHAM, REAL ESTATE OFFICE, . FRANKLIN; Macon County, North Carolina. The railroad at Walhalla jg ton be,, ex-: tended into the town. J; Jay Smith started up his steam saw mill last Monday. It is capable of turn ing out two thousand feet of lumber per day. W. W. Cobb has arrived with his fam ily from JTranldin, and will make arrange ments for the erection of a tannery, so as to be able to commence business opera tjons in spring. At Murphy, in Cherokee qounty, a place of about 170 inhabitants, we leam from.a late resident that there were ten deaths within five months. Mr. Henry Stewart has ben appointed by the governor of North Carolina a dele gate to. the Farmers' National Congress, tp be held at Indianapolis, Indjana, on the 2nd of Dec, 1885.' There is no remuner ation attached to the service. Mr. Partridge has completed the im provements at his flouring mill, having put in another run of sJ;ones, and has com menced to grind. His: milt is now capa ble of supplying all the demands in this Ipcality for flour and feed. Having tried his new Sour, we nd it a superior arti cle, and there is no occasion, now for any one to send abroad for flour. Col. Chapman, one of Q,en. Mosby's band, who has held a position in the rev enue department for the last five years, is to be entrusted with the job of ferriting out and bringing to justice the manufac turers of moonshine liquor in Tennessee and Georgia. The business is .now car ried on in counties where it has not hitherto been known. Hot work is ex pected. No leniency may be. counted on from a democratic government. Presi dent Cleveland will uphold the laws. The gold miners in Georgetown are in a demoralized condition. Work has been stopped, and several seizures have been made of the effects of the company. It sems the capitalists at New York at the head of the concern stopped paying the bills sent in. We hope matters will be arranged satisfactorily, and that the work will go on. Mr. Henry Stewart, a writer on agricul tural topics for the American Agricul turist, New York Times, and other pa pers, has taken up his residence on his place near Highlands, just vacated by Mr, Dobson, the former proprietor. We understand Mr. Dobson moved yesterday on to a farm near Franklin. The mail carrier from Walhalla to Highlands finds it a " hard road to tra vel" up the mountain , to Highlands with few and badly-fed horses, and the poor animals come into town in a- sadly jaded condition. The P. O. inspector was here a few days ago, and ordered a better state of things. We understand the route is in the hands of sub-contractors who are insuldciently paid, and who get a mere modicum of what the government " pays for the service We are told that some " favorite of Nature" and the post office authorities bid off the route Tind .fifty others, and lives in affluence and smiling contentment at Asheville on the difference between what he gets from government and what he pays pie sub contractors who dov the work. He is a "star-router," , and the stars must have been in favorable conjunction at his Rrth. Cannot our Reform government find a remedy for this state of things? The man who does the work should get the pay in full THE ATTLPKT & NORTH-WESTERN T?vpLR,QAD CO, Mr. ICelsey retVrnecThome from Nine ty-six a few days ago, where he had been to attend the railroad meeting at that place. The Atlantic and North-western Railroad Company was fully organized, and over $60,000 subscribed. Col. H. P. Hammet, qf, Greenville, was elected Pres ident ; W. J. Kirk, of Cokesbury, 8. C, vice President and Engineer ; and t .41. Pops Secretary and Treasurer. The road will be narrow guage, The parties cb'uv posing the company have the money and the will to build it,and when completed it will be run as an independent line. It is intended to .make preparations at once to have the rad graded between Johnston's in Edgefield county, S.C., and Greenville. Charleston, or some other port on the Atlantic coat.will be" the terminus on the east, and tlie road will, b'e pushed across the Blue Ridge by the most favorable and advantageous route that can be found. This company means business, and will take the lead in rairoad building across the mountains. VISITORS IN HIGHLANDS. A LIST OF ARRIVALS AT TE HIGHLANDS IjtpUSE LAsi "SpEK. W. D.
