StAflB TAXATION; Without any knowledge of the actual working of the Tax laws of North Caro lina, a perusal of their sections and chap1 iers will be apt tb inipress the reader with the wonderful ingetiuity and ability of the inventors and manufacturers of the system an ingenuity which has appar ently been exercised with the one object in view, how best to vex and embarrass the minds of the people, injure business, stop lawful trading, drive people out of the State, arid prevent inlhilgratiori there to a system most inquisitorial, complex, and full of small and annoying details from one end of the year to the other, a perpetual corroding, burning, hacking and stabbing at the tax-payer , ,in order to raise the limited income of the State, and pay the salaries of its poorly-paid officials. These laws are fully two hun dred years behind the age. They should be wholly abolished, and give' place to Something more' in accordance with com mon sense and with the present know ledge of the world regarding taxation. And it is gratifying to know that (a Tax Commission has been appointed by the Governor, "whose" duty it will be to thoroughly investigate the subject of tax ation, and. report a bjll f or listing assess ing, equalization and collection of taxes, I and also for the sale of real and personal property for taxes; and such other sub jects in regard to taxation that they may fleem proper for the best interests of the State." .... ,i N.i. Hops is the crop that requires so little care and attention that it amounts to none, as all who are familiar with hop culture are aware. As to the way hops grow here, just let us re fer you to the Milton. Brown place, and at A.
