C. - X had a beautiful gift, A spotless snow-white dove, Mv heavenly Father sent the erift. Radiant with beauty, bedewed with his love. Rapturous songs of delight Birdling sang to my heart ; It grew to be life of my life : I did not dream of a day we should part. My beautiful gift a gone ! Broken, bleeding heart, moan. t)oes the dear Father want the gift He sent? My birdling, my treasure, my own ! My dfirling has an imniortal part, And by the yearning of this sad heart Be this the one sure token" I shall one day find my pet again : One day after the sorrow arid pain ; Lore's chain cannot be broken Perhaps my treasure was far too rare Long to be trusted to mortal care ; The Father knoweth if so. Perhaps my pet is unfolding there In a holier, purified air, As she could not here below. The humblest, tiniest little flower, However dskrk the' storm may lower, , Looks up for the light to bless. Shall I, whom powers divine adorn, Th' unnumbered blessings left me, scorn ? Than the little flower, do less. - T L.L. Highlands, N. C, Nov. 29, 1835. FLORIDA CORRESPONDENCE. summer, Those who come to be citizens generally remain, and. they now include all extremes of society, from the lowest commoner to the attenuated fragments of a decaying nobility. They are all wel come alike, rich jand poor. The rich to sow broadcast the incentive, and the poor to exeCTite-triMng a balance of useful ness where both are equally needed. So that the State bids fair to become as democratic socially as.it is politically. Investments so far have generally proved safe, giving capitalists assurance to help forward the many enterprises that depend on their vital cash. Railways are open ing up the land with astonishing rapidity, and kindred ventures in other directions develop the State's resources with rare co-equality something which it would be well for our mountain friends to pon der on, as well as the cold elasticity which fails to bind a new and would-be growing society together. They can rest assured that confidence begets cash, and sociality confidence making success the child of charitable and loving hearts. Farmer Allen. P. S. " In Memorium" is a credit to your journal and hiore than that, to the writer. Highlands Directory. Oak Hill, Florida, Nov. 30, 1885. Mr. Editor tOnce more in the land of the cypms and myrtle once more in the land of the citron arid olive once more in our pleasant winter home in sun ny Florida. And a joy it is, and a wealth to us all who have been absent during the last eighteen months to once more see the lofty palms swaying in the breeze with iall their tropical grace, and once more to look upon the broad expanse of water, jfleckM with a hundred emerald isles. This; with the luxurious charm of the boft, &arni, invigorating salt sea air, blown from the "Windward Isles over the thermal gulf stream, is what has crowded us on with the keen delight of anticipa tion since we joined the army of Florida crusaders, a hundred thousand strong " With all their banners bravely spread, and nil their armour flashing high." And a. goodly company they are, and well de serve the kindly greeting and hospitable welcome they are sure to receive. For there is less of starch and more of feel ing even "among casual acquaintance than I have ever seen in anyother land. No wn'der that they return and re-re-turri, bringing With them all who would seek relief from "ailments incident to their colder homes and pampered lives, and bask under the sunny 6kies--laughing with the birds and flowers, and wile away the happy hours with no thought or care, save that their excursion limita tion ticket will all too soon expire, and oblige them once more to resume their Sloddihg waysjdf life. .
