Don't Destroy Trees and Plants.
We print below a letter from Mr. War
ren II. Manning, the landscape architect
who had full charge of the landscape
features of our village, to Mr. Tufts, re
lating to the indiscriminate collection of
wild flowers or plants and defacing the
pine trees and small pines on the Pine
hurst estate.
Mit. James W. Tufts:
Dear Sir, Permit me to call atten
tion to the serious injury that is being
done to the attractive native plants of
the Pinehurst estate which is caused by
the thoughtless practice of plucking
flowers, branches and roots and to
recommend that you ask your guests and
require others, to refrain from this prac
tice. After being plucked, wild plants
and flowers can only give pleasure to a
few people for a short time as they soon
fade, but if they are left where growing
they may be enjoyed by many people,
not only this season, but for many years
to come.
It is my intention to not only have thf
flowering plants protected but to have
them increased by every possible means
so that they may become of much greater
importance as an attraction to those who
stroll about the estate. The pines must
be protected if you ever expect me to se
cure for you an attractive winter land
scape at Pinehurst.
Unless the hearty co-operation of every
one concerned is secured, these purposes
will be wholly defeated and plants will
be exterminated that it will not be prac
ticable to re-establish. Even now the
pixie is almost exterminated and it is be
coming more difficult to find the trailing
arbutus.
Your own planting forces have never
been permitted to collect plants upon the
estate.
Yours truly,
Warren II. Manning.
At the Department Ntore.
The Department Store has been a very
busy place during the past week. Large
numbers of people from surrounding
towns have been here to do their Christ
mas shopping, attracted by the grkt
variety and low prices of the goods of
fered. The store is said to cover more
ground space than any other store build
ing in the county, and it is well rilled
with a large assortment of general mer
chandise. Manager Pritchett has left no
stone unturned in his efforts to provide
everything that the people need for cele
brating the greatest of festivals.
Following are a few of the tempting
eatables to bo found in the market depart
ment : Wild turkey, quail, geese, ducks,
oysters, fish, smoked halibut, fowl and
broilers. The following supply of meats
from Boston will also be found : Lamb,
pork, ve.il, ox tongue, sausage, frank
forts, head cheese, tripe, pigs feet, and
liver.
The other departments are fully up-to-date.
A large stock of fine candies, fruits,
fancy goods, shoes, slippers and rubbers
have just arrived.
Everybody should examine the elegant
line of silverware. This is the most
complete stock to be found in this section
of the country, and you will be surpris
ed at the low prices at which these goods
are sold. The Pinehurst souvenir
spoons of several designs are among the
latest novelties to be found here.
If customers wish for anything not
carried in stock the management will be
pleased to procure it for them.
Benlah Hill llaptist Imroli.
Rev. Hugh Ingram of Pekin, N. C,
pastor of the IJeulah Hill Free Baptist
church, preached his regular monthly ser
mon at that church last Sunday, and a
large audience assembled to hear him.
After the service the pastor stated that
his pastorate for the year had expired
and he desired to know if the church
wished his services for the ensuing year.
He then called Mr. F. T. Spinney to the
chair to act as moderator, and retired
from the building. The church unani
mously voted to retain the pastor for an
other year at a salary of 20.00, and
railroad expenses to the amount of $4.00,
making in all $24.00 perjuinum.
Mr. John Caddell was then appointed
a committee to notify the pastor of the
action of the meeting, and Mr. Ingram
accepted the reappointment and will
preach twelve sermons during the year
one on the fourth Sunday of each month,
at 11 o'clock a. in.
Messrs. Bunnell and Black were ap
pointed a committee on order at the
Christmas Day celebration, and Mr. John
Caddell was elected librarian, and also au
thorized to attend to building a chimney
in the church so that it may be finished
before Christinas.
The Christinas exercises will be held
on Monday the 26th inst., at 11 o'clock
a. m. The tree will be out of doors if
the weather is pleasant, and a general
good time is expected. The church is
located about three mile3 from our vil
lage and our Northern guests are cordial
ly invited to be present.
