Boston Pout, NEWS IN BRIEF. Merry Christinas. Have you seen the Pinehurst souvenir spoons at the Department Store. Christmas tree for our villagers in the Village Hall tomorrow evening at 7 o'clock. The Department Store continues to re ceive confectioneries, fruits and season able eatables. The new bowling alley opened last evening and was well patronized. Some line scores were made. The Department Store will be closed during the hours from 10 a. m. to 5 p. m. next Monday, the 26th. The Casino reading room contains the leading papers and magazines for the tree use of all in the village. A nice line of silverware, china, and cut glass novelties for Christmas, just opened at the Department Store. Trade at the Department Store has been brisk during the week, but there are lots of nice things left for late buy ers. Christian union services will be held in the Village Hall next Sunday morning, with preaching by ljev. Mr. Emery. All are invited. The roads leading out of the village are being repaired, winch will add to the enjoyment of our guest in their drives about the country. Bishop Cheshire of the Diocese of North Carolina will conduct the Episco pal services on Sunday, New Years Day, at li :15 o'clock p. in. Lee Phillips and family of the "Lenox'" made a pleasant family party to MeKen zie's -pond in the new and popular wagonette list Sunday. 1'ev. Mr. Emery conducted the Chris tian union services last Sabbath morning, and Hew Mr. Gregory held an Episco pal service in the afternoon in the Village Hall. The colored people's Christmas tree and entertainment will be held in the Village Hall next Monday afternoon at t wo o'clock. A colored Santa Claus will distribute the presents. I'ev. Mr. Gregory will conduct Episco pal services in the Village Hall next Sun day afternoon, at 3:15 o'clock. Miss Lugcnie Upham will sing the "Cantique do Noel," by Adam, at this service. Mr. Frank E. Lindey, the popular leader of the Holly Inn orchestra, has been confined to his room for several days with a severe cold. We are pleased to learn that his health is improving. A young lady in our village, who gave her boots such a nice polish before going church last Sunday was greatly sur prised when informed that she had been ning a fine quality of stove blacking. i Hon. Henry Blount, the famous orator who recently made a short visit in our village, has an article in a Hockv Mount. N. C, paper in which he pays a high compliment to Pinehurst and its people. Arrangements are being made to hold a baby show and cake-walk in the Jack son Hamlet colored church sometime next month. Prizes will be awarded to the handsomest baby and the best walk ing couple. The play grounds back of Holly Inn have been newly laid out bv Mr. Letien and his force of gardeners during the past week and hundreds of young long-leaf pines and other trees and shrubs have been planted there. The Holly Inn orchestra gave anothei fine concert at the Inn last Sunday even ing, which was attended by a large and appreciative audience. The orchestra will give special concerts in the music room at the Inn everv Sunday evening during the season. Tickets for the excursion to the Christ mas tree at Ueulali Hill Baptist church next Monday morning can be obtained at Holly Inn and the Department Store. The rate for the round trip is only 25 cents, and money will be refunded in case of bad weather. Teams will leave the Holly Inn at 10 o'clock, sharp. The exercises will commence at 11 o'clock. Pev. Mr. Armstrong preached at the Jackson Hamlet colored church last Sabbath to a large congregation, among whom were the following from our vil lage: Mr. and Mrs. Edwards, Mr. and Mrs. Bosworth, Mrs. and Miss Ballentyne, the Misses Cummings, Miss Ilutchins and Mr. Brayton. A preaching service will be held next Sabbath at 2 :30 o'clock p. m. A happy party from the Holly Inn, in cluding Mr. and Mrs. Wolcott, Mr. and Mrs. Edwards, Mr. and Mrs. Merrill, and Miss Merrill, and Mr. and Mrs. Delanoy, started out in the wagonette last Satur day on a hunt for mistletoe. Mr. Wolcott acted as whip, to the satisfaction of all concerned. After many trying exper iences in and around McKenzie's pond, they succeeded in obtaining a full cargo and returned with the feeling of duty well done. The arboretum has been started at the Nurseries, a space being devoted to the planting of one specimen of every tree or shrub used or found spontaneously in or near Pinehurst. Every plant there has been carefully labeled, and it is thought that this innovation will prove very in teresting to the numerous lovers of plants now residing in Pinehurst. There is always something going on at the Nursery grounds, ai.d a pleasant hour can be spent in looking over the various interesting trees, shrubs and vegetables. at PERSONAL MENTION. II. Peed of Paleigh registered at the Holly Inn on Sunday. Miss E. Gibbs of Lee, Mass., arrived Holly Inn last Wednesday. Miss E. J. Dve of Boston, Mass., is among the recent arrivals at Dolly Inn. James S. Case and wife of New York City are guests at the Holly Inn. WaUer Brittin of New York City ar rived at the Holly inn last Friday. J. Frank Seavey and wife, and Miss L. A. Webster, all of Dover, X. II., are at Holly Inn. Miss Sophia Goodrich, daughter of Pev. Mr. Goodrich of Exeter, X. 1L, ai rived last evening Miss E. S. Oakeyof Greater New York arrived at the Hollv Inn on Tuesday and will remain during the season. Miss Eugenie Upham is taking Mr. Lindsey's place in the Holly Inn orches tra during that gentleman's illness. Mrs. P. Hungerford of Chester, Conn., arrived at Holly Inn on Wednesday evening and will remain during the winter. C. A. Adams and family, who spent several days at the Atlanta peace jubilee, returned on Saturday much pleased with their visit. Miss Kate Price of Pottsville, Pa., who passed the last season at the Holly Inn, is again a guest there, and will remain during the winter. N. M. Bryan, the Aberdeen merchant, paid a visit to our village last Sunday, lie was accompanied by Edward P. Nebbs of Bridgeport, Conn. Mrs. Edward C. Thayer and Miss Ball of Keene, N. II., and Miss Chapin of Bos ton, Mass., were among the arrivals at Holly Inn on Saturday. J. M. Uobinson and family of North Beading, Mass., have rented house G on East Main street for the season, and took possession last Monday. Mr. Tufts returned to his home last Sunday, after a very pleasant visit here. He is expected to return here for the sea son soon after the new year. Dr. C. C. Emery, a brother to Mrs. Flint of the Pine Grove House, arrived here last Friday from his home in New Orleans, for a few weeks visit. John P. Gamble and family who passed last season here will again oc cupy cottage Xo. 32 on East Main street. Their arrival is expected in a few days. The family of Mr. Lee Philips were made happy last Saturday evening by the arrival of Mr. Phillips from New York accompanied by his friend Dr. B. F. Vosburg of the same city. Col. T. J. Anderson, the genial, wide awake general passenger agent of the Seaboard Air Line, made a short visit to our village last Saturday with a party of friends, stopping at Holly Inn. The colonel, who has aptly been termed the Mark Twain of the railway world, pos sesses a fund of ready humor that makes him a welcome guest wherever he goes. We hope he will be able to repeat his visit at a time when his duties will per mit a longer stay.
