ment is Announced.
Itn aim will he to .Provide Instruction
for "Young 9In and Masters
During- the Winter Season.
Formal announcement of an important
addition to Pinehurst's equipment, a
winter Preparatory School for boys, to
be opened early next November, was
made during the week. This step is but
one in the general plan which is to make
Pinehurst. complete in every particular,
and it will add immeasurably to the
dignity and character of the Village.
The news will be received with delight
by Pinehurst Lovers everywhere.
The Village is exceptionally fortunate
in having secured as Head Master for the
school, the services of Mr. Aldice G.
Warren, a teacher of wide experience,
whose work as the head of a summer
camp-school, "Fitzhugh Hull," at Sodus
Point, Wayne county, N. Y., has at
tracted the attention of many prominent
educators and won for him a wide circle
of friends among pa'euts who have
placed their sons in hie care. This
school also bears the personal endorse
ment of the following distinguished men :
Rev. Henry Anstice, D. D., Rector St.
Mathias Church, Philadelphia; Rev.
Harry P. Dewey, Pastor Church of the
Pilgrims, Brooklyn; Frederick L. Gam
age, D. C. L., Head Master, St. Paul's
School, Garden City, N. Y. ; Rev. Wm.
M. Grosvenor, D. D., Rector Church of
the Incarnation, New York city ; Hon.
David J. Hill, 1). D. LL. D., U. S. Min
ister to Switzerland; Henry Hopkins, D.
D., President of Williams College; Ham
ilton W. Mabie, LL. D., editor Outlook,
New York city ; John Bach McMaster,
Litt. D., University of Pennsylvania,
Philadelphia; Bliss Perry, Editor-in-Chief,
Atlantic Monthly; Rev. Theodore
Sill Rumney, D. D., Rector St. Peter's
Church, Germantown, Pa. ; Rev. Henry
C. Swentzel, D. D., Rector St. Luke's
Church, Brooklyn ; Dr. Charles M. Un
derwood, Fourth Ave. and Mt. Prospect
Ave., Newark, N. J.; Hon. William E.
Werner, Court of Appeals, Albany, N.
Y.; Hon. William R. Wilcox, President
Board of Park Commissioners, New
York city ; Rev. El wood Worcester, D.
D. , Rector St. Stephen's Church, Phila
delphia. Mr, Warren has been located in Pine
hurst during the past winter as a private
tutor, lie has made many friends, and
has impressed all as a young man singu
larly fitted for this work ; dignified, re
fined, cultured and earnest; one who
realizes that "men, not books" educate.
The special field of the Pinehurst Pre
paratory School will be to provide in
struction for young men and masters,
whom it seems desirable to have spend
the winter away from the evil effects
attendant upon the severe weather of the
North, and the work will be so arranged
that pupils may take up as little or as
much work as they desire, devoting
a part or whole of their time to study,
thus enabling them to enjoy the many
advantages of life here and still keep up
with their studies. The school will be
organized upon the principle of small
classes and thorough work, and one
Master will be provided for every six
pupils.
The advantage of Pinehurst as a loca
tion for such a school are obvious, for
with its golf, riding, shooting, pure air,
glorious sunshine, superb climate and
right conditions for living, no place can
furnish such ideal conditions for the
combination of study and recreation.
In connection with the school provision
will be made for private instruction for
young women.
The ultimate aim is to erect a school
building, but this will not be done at

TOWER SHOOTING UNIQUE !
Addition to Trap-Shooting Equipment
Pleases Sportsmen.

A. E. Lard TakeNweepNtakea.
The winter's program of trap-shooting
fixtures was brought to a formal end
Thursday morning, with a special event,
thirty targets thrown from the new tow
er. The event was one of the most
unique and interesting of the season,
plainly indicating that the addition of
this feature to the trap-shooting equip
ment is to be a permanently popular
one. The attendance was large and in
the company assembled were many
women.
These towers are not uncommon In
Europe, but it is believed that Pinehurst
has the only one in this country. It has
been built at the suggestion of Mr. Lard,
who has found tower shooting decidedly
popular across the water. The idea is to
produce conditions like those the sports
man finds in duck and similar shooting.
C. A. Loekwood, of Brooklyn, N. Y.,
won the event, with a score of sixteen.
A. E. Lard, of St, Joseph, Mo., and I. C.
Bates Dana, of New York city, tied for
second place, with thirteen and M. II.
Wilson, of Cleveland, O., and Herbert
L. Jillson, of Worcester, Mass., were
tied at twelve. T. Sterling Beckwith,
of Cleveland, O., was fourth with eleven,
and Col. P. II. Mayo, of Richmond, Va.,
fifth with nine.
There were five events, five birds to
the left, right, overhead, and unknown
angles, and five pairs of doubles, in the
order named.
