A llomanee of the Passion Play at
Oberauiinerg-au.
"On The Cross", a romance of the
Passion Play at Oberammergau, by
Wilhelmine von Hillern and Mary J,
Safford, published by Drexel Biddle,
Philadelphia, is to say the least, a re
markable book. The impression it
makes may differ in accordance with the
temperament of the reader, but the
strength, vividness and interest of the
volume cannot be denied. It is possible
that the story could have been told in
less space and interest may lag until well
along in the book, but when the reader
once enters into the story, it is with re
gret that it is lain down unfinished. The
book deals with the Passion Play, and
gives a vivid description of it, and there
are striking pictures of the people and
the characters. With this is interwoven
a strange love story. The volume is
daintily bound in brown, with a cover
design in gold, blue and black, embody
ing the passion flower. There are num
erous illustrations. .
A Hook for Golfers.
"The Magic Mashie and Other Golfish
Stories,'' by Edwin L. Sabin, published
by A. Wessels, New York city, is a book
especially designed for golfers, a volume
of fourteen short stories all based upon
golf or golfers, with a tinge of love,
romance, or excitement, delicately inter
woven. Perhaps most weird of the
series is "A Spector of the Links".
"The Long Game" is decidedly unique
and so utterly improbable that one is
almost tempted to believe portions of it
All in all the book is one that golfers
will enjoy possessing and which will
afford entertainment from cover to cover.
The book is effectively bound in deep
green with cover design of crossed golf
clubs and golf balls in red and white.
Concerning" Andrew .Jackson.
Drexel Biddle, Philadelphia, announces
the publication of a book by Alfred
Henry Lewis, by the middle of May.
The story deals with the positive day of
Andrew Jackson, and is warm with love,
and strong with politics of that forceful
sort which fell forth between Jackson
and Calhoun, with his followers, over
secession, nullification and state rights.
The volume will be illustrated by Henry
Hutt, and the frontispiece was posed by
a reigning beauty, the daughter of a
governor. Mr. Lewis is well-known as
the writer of the "Wolfville" short
story series.
The Ileal Ilenedict Arnold.
A. S. Barnes & Co., New York, will
shortly issue "The Ileal Benedict Ar
noiu, oy unaries uurr touu, a com
panion volume to this author's "True
Aaron Burr," which .was one of the sue
cessful books of last season.
In the present work, while not con
doning Arnold's treason, Mr. Todd, em
phasizes his invaluable services to Amer
ica, and shows conclusively that he four
times saved the cause of the Colonies.
Mr. Todd also shows that it was the in
fluence of Arnold's wife and his fear of
losing her should her treasonable cor
respondeuce with the British ollicers be
discovered, which induced him to be
tray his country, and not the motives
generally ascribed.
The Mumbling- Mock.
A novel of more than ordinary interest
is promised soon by Messrs. A. S.
Barnes & Co., New York, in "The
Stumbling Block" by Edwin Pugh. One
who has read the MS. writes: "The
whole story is clever to a degree. The
originality of conception, the quality of
atmosphere imparted to each changing
scene, and the very clear and effective
analysis of character are very striking
and unusual."
Jlleiincr's Types of IBeauty.
The Abbey Press, New York city, has
just published a handsome volume,
"Bleuner's Types of Beauty." Mr.
Carle J. Blenner is well-known as a por
trait painter, not only in this country,
but in London, where a few seasons ago,
he gave an exhibition opened by II. II.
II., the Duke of Cambridge. He has ex
hibited for several years at the Salon,
and his work received honorable men
tion at the World's Fair and the Pan
American Exposition. This reproduc
tion in book form, of some of the artist's
most popular paintiugs, should prove of
interest to art lovers in general.
Wreath of Wong-.
The Abbey Press, New York, will
issue shortly, a collection of religious
and philosophical poems entitled
"Wreaths of Song," by the liev. T. J.
O'Mahony, D. D., of All Hallows Col
lege, Dublin, Ireland. The author gives
many evidences of the poetic genius
which made his uncle, Father Prout,
famous.
