Philadelphia, Ijead in Qualification. 7T HE eighteen-hole match play handi- cap tournament begun Saturday, furnished a pretty series of contests and resulted in a final victory for F. J. Bailey of Kearsarge golf club, North Conway, N. II., over J. A. Baker of the Glen View golf club, Chicago, one up, after a match which was uncertain to the end. Bailey was one up at the seventeenth hole and halved the eighteenth for a win. The Berkshire cups were offered for the winner and runner-up. Edwin A. Freeman of the Montclair golf club, playing from scratch, was an easy winner of the best gross score in qualification with a card of eighty-seven, a duplicate of the round which won him the cup the week previous, and Burritt S. Mills of Philadelphia, playing with a handicap of eighteen strokes, led the field with a net score of seventy-six, five strokes better than his nearest opponent, C. M. Many onlookers watched the matches from the broad piazzas of the club house and the participants all express them selves as delighted with the new courts. This new feature is sure to be a nota ble addition to the winter's entertain ment program. E, Albion Bailey of Boston, and Miss Gertrude Lamb of New York, were the winners of the final match from Ilev. G. B. Harrington of Washington, D. C, and Miss Ethel Check of East Orange, N. J., 4-6, 6-5 6-3, and the first round from G. W. Lieber of New York, and Miss Long of Pinehurst, 4-6, 6-5, 6-5. Mr. Harrington and Miss Check took the first round from M. B. Byrnes of New York, and Miss Carrie Check of East Orange, N. J., 6-1, 6-5. THE SEASON'S PROGRAM. The events to come are as follows : January. 26 Mens' singles for The Berkshire cup. February 9 Womens' singles for The Holly Inn cup February 23 Mixed doubles for The Carolina cups. March 8 Mens' singles for The Pine hurst Outlook cups. March 21, 22 and 23 Championship tournament, mens' and womens' singles, and mixed doubles, for the Pinehurst Championship Tennis Trophies. Dances at Xlie Village Hall. A series of Friday evening dances at the Village Hall have been very pleas antly begun and are being well attended by the employees of the Village. Many of the guests are finding pleasure in watching the dancers, Mrs. II. W. PrleHt Presided. Mrs. II. W. Priest of The Carolina, presided at the tea at the Golf Club house Saturday.
