Young People Speed Departing Year and Welcome the Hew. HTew "Wear's Dance, and Progressive Ilridg-e Tourney are Anions' Week's Pleasures. HE WEEK at The Holly Inn has been one of the merriest of the season, .with social pleasures much in evidence, a dance in honor of the de parting year, private dinner and bridge whist tournament being features of the week. GHOST DANCE FOR OLD YEAR. New Years eve the young people had a merry time of it, a dance speeding the old and welcoming the New Year, the special feature being a ghost dance at midnight. Lights were extinguished, a group of candles placed in the hall, and circling with clasped hands the merry group turned itself loose. MR. AND MRS. RALPH ENTERTAIN. A delightful feature of the week was a midnight supper given in honor of the departing year and the coming of the new for a party of ten friends, by Mr. and Mrs. I. D. II. lialph of Philadelphia. Seats were taken shortly before twelve and cigars were being lighted just as the clock chimed the midnight hour. The ' silent toast " was drank then Old Lang Syne" sung with clasped hands, and an hour spent pleasantly in story telling. PROGRESSIVE BRIDGE TOURNEY. A bridge whist tournament also enter tained guests New Years Eve, Mrs. A. II. Motley of New York, and Mrs. W. F. Wilson of Pittsburg, winning the worn ens' prizes, and Mr. J. F. Bishop of Bridgeport, and Mr. T. T. Watson of Buenos Ayres, the mens. AMONG THE GUESTS. Prominent among the late arrivals are Mr. and Mrs. Levi Woodbury of Wash ington, who i eturn for their annual so journ. Mr. Woodbury is the owner of the St. James Hotel, and President of the Norfolk and Washington Potomac liiver steamship line Mr. and Mrs. W. II. Davis of Bar Har bor return for their fourth winter here, welcomed by many former acquaintances. Mr. and Mrs. Harry M. Newington and Master John C. Newington of New York, will remain several weeks. Mrs. Charles M. Clarke, Miss Katharine Clarke and Miss Louise Clarke of New York, will remain several weeks. Mr. and Mrs. Marcus T. Lothrop of Buffalo, are spending several weeks here, enjoying golf and out door pleasures. Mr. and Mrs. M. W. Hanson of Little ton, N. C, and Mr. II. Hansom of Wel don, N. C, spent a portion of the week here. They are frequent visitors and always welcome. Mr. and Mis. J. B. Bryan and Miss Margaret Bryan of llochester, are mak ing a short stop. Mr. John Thompson and his daughter, Mrs. A. II. Motley of New York, are among the weeks arrivals. Dr. and Mrs. Harvey Chushing of Bal timore are here for golf, delighted with their first impressions of Pinehurst. Mr. George F. Blake and his son, Mr. Fordyce Blake of Worcester, spent a portion of the week here, enjoyed the shooting and inspected their new cottage which is rapidly nearing completion. Mrs. Bishop and Mr. Julien E. Bishop of Bridgeport, are among the weeks arrivals. Mr. C. D. M. Halsey of New York has joined Mrs. William Banes of Over brook. Mr. F. II. Armstrong of Chicago, is making a long sojourn. Mr. C. S. Bradt, Mr. Ed. Kelly, and Mr. C. S. Hester, of New York, are en joying the shooting. Mr, II. J. Washburn and Mr. F. M. Sparks of New Y'ork, spent the week here pleasantly. Mr. and Mrs. Livingston Bruen, New York; Mr. and Mrs. O. P. Hall, Brook lyn; Mr. and Mrs. L. D. Garrison, Cort land, N. Y. ; and Miss II. F. Versey, Boston, were guests of the week. AT Till! IBJBItlCSlIIllK. Opening' of Popular If otel Signal for Incoming- of Old Friends. The Berkshire threw back its hospitable doors Tuesday, and the event is the signal for an incoming of old friends, many of whom are booked for the coming week. This popular hotel is more inviting than ever before because of extensive renova tion, and it seems good to find Manager and Mrs. F. II. Abbott in their accus tomed places. No hotel in the Village is more home like in its character, and the quiet charm of life here is responsible for demands for accommodations which are far beyond the supply. There is also a fascination about the location which appeals to all,' and the broad sunlit verandas are the envy of the entire Village. Among the first to register were Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Wilson and little Miss Elizabeth of Pittsburg, who come after a month at The Inn, and will remain until the house closes. Mrs. Mary E. Stone, Mr. Arthur C. Stone and Mr. C. Edward Barney of L'rovidence, are here for a long sojourn. Mr. and Mrs. D. N. Clark of Westville, will, as usual, be located here, and those booked for the immediate future include many who have been annual visitors for years. THJE CAIHUxA OPEXIIVtt. The opening of the magnificent Hotel Carolina takes place January eleventh and the event is being anticipated by the entire Village for it is the signal for the commencement of many delightful social affairs which are a delightful feature of the winter season.
