COMPETITION IS YERY KEEN Match Play Rounds of St. Valentine's Tourney Close Throughout. Numerous Surprise Keep Interest High and nig- Crowd Close to Score Boards. HE MATCH play rounds of the St. Valentine's tournament developed keen competition throughout all divisions, a large proportion of matches being won on the seventeenth and home greens, a goodly number re quiring extra holes to decide them, one of which was carried to the twenty-second green. Never lias the field been more widely represent ive, a special feature being the large representation of Southerners together with liberal Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, New York State, and Western entries ; the number of players who have figured prominently in import ant events, being large. Numerous surprises awakened a sense of uncertainty and kept the interest of the big crowd which thronged the Club houft in close proximity to the score bv.ird and interested onlookers upon the course, Saturday's finals being the cli max of a great week.
