Naturally interest cen tered in the first division, but play was equally close in the others, notably the fourth, with two nineteeu-hole matches in the semi-final round and- very few matches throughout that were won with more liberal margins than "two and one." At the head of the line was the Porter Lard twenty-hole battle, following close upon Mr. Porter's defeat of Mr. 0. P. Clay of the Cleveland Country Club, on the nineteenth green; J. V. llurd of the Pittsburg Country Club, playing an ex tra hole match with Dr. G. J. McKee of Oakmont, in the fourth division, G. J. Loveley of Brae Burn, a similar match with J. 1). Miller of Mohawk, in the fifth, and II. C. Fitzgerald of Mohawk, another with Mr. Miller in the consolation, and G. 1J. Verkes of Detroit, winning from y. S.
