When first dis- a turbed by the clear shrill strike cry, he quietly log-hopped for a comfortable distance and swung far and free ; without doubt, finding great enjoyment in the fact that he had succeeded in giving his disturbers the impression that he was concealed in the immediate vicinity, thus gaining a long lead. In due time, however, a stray 1 L Lfl Hunter, Jobmon and Beach Lead Field With liberal Margins Robert Hunter, Wilbur C. Straight away the chase led over hill and through swamp for some three miles, then swinging back, Reynard crossed and doubled on his old trail and swept on through gulley and across creek, to the trampled Dairy yard where following was well nigh impossible, and the hunt would have undoubtedly ended if Rey nard had hidden. But here once again, an inquisitive member picked up the de parting trail on its way to the golf links, and the music rose in a wild murmur to vanish in the distance on a wide circle back to the starting point. Again and again clever ruse distanced the pack until Master Twitty, in tribute to this master of craft and cunning, called in the hounds ; baffled but by no means convinced that the incident was closed or brief acquaintance at an end.
