were the patronesses; Misses Helmer,
Shannon, Van Ostrand, Durant, Cum
mings and Fownes active members of the
committee of arrangements, assisted by
Messrs Dillon, Durant, Hurd, Clapp,
King, Foot and Webster.

A card party was enjoyed at The Berk
shire on Tuesday evening, auction,
bridge, five hundred and plain whist be
ing played.
The prize winners in auction were Mrs.
Blancke, Mrs. Bowles, Mr. Clark and
Mrs. Thompson ; in bridge, Mr. Kinney,
Mr. O'Connor and Mrs. Carr; in five
hundred, Miss Litchfield, Mrs. Vallance

Ten million dollars will be required to
pay the army of lumbermen at work in
the forests of northeast Maine, New
Hampshire and Vermont and the prov
inces of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia
this winter. In this army of loggers
are 60,000 men and 22,000 horses. The
fruits of the campaign will be a crop of
2,500,000,000 feet of pine, cedar, spruce,
hemlock and birch. In Maine the har
vest' for the pulp mills will reach the en
ormous total of 350,000,000 feet this win
ter. The amount cut for the sawmills
will not be far from 400,000,000.
