THE PINEHURST OUTLOOK OUTDISTANCES THE FIELD Sixth Annual Midwinter Handicap is America's Most Classic Shoot 42AO in Added Money and Special Clans Trophic are Feature of lOl.'t Tournament FROM THE standpoint of rapid increase in pop ularity Pinehurst's clas sic Midwinter Handicap has outdistanced the field ; last season's tour nament, the fifth annual, establishing its national prominence. Through out the entire year just ending, it has been the subject of retrospection and prophesy wherever trap shooters have congregated, nnd the sixth annual meeting close at Jiand, is being anticipated from New Brunswick to Florida, and Massachusetts to California. In percentage of experts no shoot of the entire year equals the -contest and, naturally, the most approved innovation of the coming tournament is provision for the field through additional special prizes to be contested for in three separate classes in both the Preliminary and the Handicap. The added money has also jumped upward from $1G00 to $2500, with the choicest plums a guaran tee of $500 and trophy to , the Handicap winner, 200 and trophy to the Prelimin ary winner and medals for high averages, irrespective of the opportunities offered by sweepstakes and additional optional sweepstakes. Details of management will again be in the hands of Luther J. Squier, duPont's expert, and the handicap committee will continue to be selected from the shooters in attendance and cov ering as wide a range of territory as pos sible. Inter-state rules will govern and the Squier money-back system will be in effect. The superb location of the traps and their ideal background is enhanced by complete equipment, including Club Jiouse and four sets of traps. . Four full days are provided by the pro gram, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, January 22, 23, 24, 25, and many will gather in advance of and re main after the shoot to enjoy the diversi fied attractions of the Village ; golf, ten nis and hunting over the 50,000 acre Game Preserve. Best of all, however, will be the stepping backward into Autumn from the first chill of a northern winter. , Preliminary practise and in formal sweepstakes will lead up to the opening day's shoot on Wednesday, the :22 nd, which will be devoted to ten twenty target events with an entrance of $2.00 and additional optional sweeps of $2.00 and $2.50. The second day's program repeat? the opening day. The Prelimin ary on Friday, the 24th, will be preceded by five twenty-target events with an entrance of $2.00 and optional sweeps of $2.00 and $2.50. Handicaps in the hundred-target Preliminary will range from sixteen to twenty-three yards . and the entrance fee will be $10.00 with an additional optional sweep of $2.00. In connection with this event three special cups will be contested for by those who have participated in all regular events of the opening day p. the field divided into three classes according to their scores. The handicap on Saturday, the 25th, will follow preliminary events as on Friday, and the handicaps will be on the same basis. The entrance fee will be $20.00 with an optional sweep of $2.00 and there will also be three special class trophies as in the Preliminary. While the Hotel Carolina will, as in the past, entertain most of the contestants, The Holly Inn and Berkshire will be equal ly popular, the cashier of the shoot hav ing a branch office at the latter hotel. A number of the contestants will also be at The Magnolia and Lexington and a few will be entertained at the home of friends in private cottages. Thus the range of accommodations appeals to all pocket books with a favorite assembly point at which to gather in a congenial circle. The Club will carry standard loads in well known powders and ammunition sent in advance in care of the Gun Club will be held awaiting arrival of contestants. Booklet tournament program may be se cured by addressing Gun Club Secretary. Advance entries are requested by both mail and wire. Holiday Week Pool Tournament A Holiday week handicap pool tourna ment is being planned at The Carolina and similar events will be held later at The Inn and Berkshire. Many women are among those who frequent the bil liard rooms of the hotels and many ex perts are attracted annually by the Caro lina's match table, one of the first to be installed in a resort hotel. Animal Pet Thriving- The animal pets in the Pine Grove are await ing ea ge rly the arrival o f thei i f rien ds the children. In new cages they are thriving splendidly and the result is many additions to the rapidly increasing and somewhat cosmopolitan colony. . AT THE RIFLE BUTTS Model 1912 Hammerless Repeating Shotgun 20 Gauge Take Down The extremely light weight of this gun (only 54 pounds) will make it very pop ular with ladies who shoot, and in fact with all who appreciate the comfort of light-weight in firearms. Notwithstanding its light weight, it is the strongest repeat ing shotgun on the market, as all metal parts are made of Nickel Steel. In grace of outline and refinement of detail and finish it is unapproached by repeating guns of other makes. The simple manner in which it is loaded and unloaded, taken apart and put together are also features that recommend the gun highly. Look over one at your dealer's. They are sold everywhere.
