trees soaring straight and fine above.
But a little distance south of this oint
are the well-defined remains of the fort
built by Sir Walter Raleigh's unlucky
colonists, under charge of John White,
in 1585. This was Fort Raleigh, and it
was to be the heart of the "City of
Kaleigh," the capital of the colony of
Virginia, Sir Walter giving his own name
to the city and that of his royal mistress
to the territory of which it was designed
to be the capital. This is the largest
island in North Carolina, and it is one of
the two islands in the United States in
which there is a court-house ; the other
being Key West, Florida. The island
bears, in fact, the town of Manteo,
named for the only friendly Indian, the
chief who was carried to England, to
gether with wild turkeys, Irish potatoes,
Indian corn and tobacco ; the Indian, the
birds and the products of the soil being
alike amazing things to Queen Elizabeth,
Sir Walter Raleigh and her other subjects.
Thus this island contributed three
things to much of the world and four
to a good deal of it. Manteo was the
first Indian baptized by the rites of the
Episcopal Church, and John White's
grand-daughter, Virginia Dare, born in
Fort Raleigh, was the first white child
of English blood to see the light on this
continent, and she and Manteo were bap
tized almost at the same time. There is
the outline of tle star-shaped fort, and
in its centre the granite memorial which
tells the story in laconic style, simple
but wonderfully effective. All about are
the vivid green holly trees, rich with
their scarlet berries, stately cedars and
whispering pines, and the yellow jas
mine runs riot with its golden bells and
fills the very air with its fragrance. It
is death in life, for no man knows the
fate of the " Lost Colony of Roanoke."
Only at the last roll-call, the ultimate
end of things, will the greatest secret of
the English race become clarified and
cease to be a mystery. Very gracefully
the State has named the county-seat
Manteo and the county Dare in honor of
little Virginia, who, as one writer will
have it, was no less a personage than the
natural daughter of England's great
knight, Sir Walter Raleigh.
Still southward the route lies, through
a narrow sound known as Roanoke
Sound, which is on the west side of this
historic island, on the east side of which
is Croatan Sound. Roanoke Sound leads
into the vast stretch of Pamlico Sound,
the greatest of them all, with the barrier-
reef bounding it on the east, and with
several inlets into the sea, and the main
land on the westward entirely out of
sight. Two or three light-houses are in
view and structures which seem like
large goods boxes on the reef, or
41 bank?," to use the local terms, are life
savinff stations or homes. The reader
can steer southwest and take a peep at
Hatteras, running across a reef in the
sound, where there is very often quite a
swirl of water, though not at all danger
ous, and landing on what is a long and
extremely narrow island, a sort of shoe
string, so to speak, some fifty miles long
and from a half mile to three miles wide,
the very widest point being at Cape Hat
teras, where there is quite a forest. As
soon as the voyager lands ,one thing
arrests his attention not before seen.
This is the palmetto which is everywhere
in the woods. And rteht here the natu
ralist and the botanist may make a note :
Mason and Dixon's line used to be
termed the boundary between the North
and the South, while, as a matter of
fact, Cape Hatteras is the line ; north of
it there is no sub-tropical growth, south
of it is the palmetto. To it come the fish
and the birds from the north and the
south. It is one of the most remarkable
lines of division imaginable.

Sumnierrille's Popularity
Summerville, S. C, is one of the best
known winter resorts in the South and a
favorite with elderly people, who seek
quiet and rest. Gilbert S. Nichols is the

have been greatly improved, and various
tournaments are in progress and planned.
