Topping's first round was a two and
one victory from Chisholm Beach of Fox
Hills. All even at the turn, he won the
tenth, lost the eleventh and twelfth,
halved the thirteenth, won the next
three holes and halved the seventeenth
in 3 for the match, f Likewise in
the second round he defeated Dr. C. H.
Gardner of Agawam by the same score.
Two up at the turn, Topping lost the
tenth and eleventh, won the twelfth and
thirteenth, lost the fourteenth and fif
teenth, won the sixteenth in 4 and the
seventeenth in 3. fin the semi-final,
Erman J. Ridgway of Montciair was
disposed of by three and two. Two
up on the fourth, Ridgway won the fifth,
halved the next three holes and took the
ninth to tie, gaining a lead on the tenth
and halving the eleventh. Topping
squared matters on the twelfth and
halved the thirteenth, Ridgway losing
the next three holes in a 4, 3 and 4.
Kerr's first round was by 5 and 3 from
M. F. O'Connell of Alpine, his second the
defeat of Walter J. Travis, the sensation
of the tournament and the match which
claimed the gallery, f Two down at the
turn, Travis halved the tenth in 4, won
the eleventh, 45, the 398-yard twelfth in
3 and two under bogey, to a fast 4 for Kerr
to tie the score, and gained the lead on
the thirteenth, 5 6. The fourteenth was
halved in 4, and Kerr evened the match
again with a 3 on the 212-yard fifteenth
where he made the edge of the green and
tried for a long 2, gaining the lead with
a perfect 4 to a 5 for Travis on the six
teenth. On the short seventeenth, Kerr
had the advantage on the drive for Tra
vis was in the pit, but the Garden City
player got well out and when Kerr ap
proached he hit Travis' ball and knocked

taliated on his fourth by hitting Kerr's

drive on the eighteenth followed by a
second to the trap guarding the green, a

while Kerr was bordering the green on
his second and dead on his third ; halv
ing the hole in 5 as a delicate compli
ment to his distinguished opponent, win

Kerr's semi-final was a win from Wal
ter Fairbanks of the Denver Country
Club. Four up at the turn, Kerr main
tained his lead, winning on the four
teenth green, five up and four, fin
the Championship consolation, Weber
was eight and six in his final round
with Beach. In the semi-final, Weber
defeated M. F. O'Connell of Alpine, six
and five, and Beach advanced on a four
and three win over Foot.
Walter Fairbanks, the Denver Country
Club veteran, who won a qualification
play-off from C. V. Meserole of Ontario,
was the star in the first round of match
play, defeating Harold Weber of Inver
ness on the home green by winning the
fifteenth hole and halving the last three.
The cards of 77 and 78 were among the
best of the week, f Going out Weber
won the second, 4 5, and the fourth,
3 4, but he lost the fifth, 56, the
seventh, 6 7, and th.e ninth, 3 4 ; the
first halved in 5 and the third, sixth and
eighth in 4's. Coming home, Fairbanks
maintained his lead of 1 up by halving
the tenth in 4, the eleventh in 5 and the
twelfth and thirteenth in ,4's. Weber,
however, evened matters with a 4 on the
432-yard fourteenth, but he lost the 212
yard fifteenth to a par 3, where Weber
sliced his drive to the woods. On the
sixteenth, Weber was in the rough again,
but a brilliant recovery saved the hole
for a half in 5. The two remaining
holes were halved in perfect play, 3's

In the second round Fairbanks found
C. L. Becker of Woodland a tenacious
opponent, who but for a negotiated
stymie, would have tied the match on the
home green after brilliant recovery from
a pulled tee shot. The pair made the
turn all even, a stymie on the second:
costing Fairbanks a win. Becker took,
the lead on the tenth with a fast 3 but
Fairbanks won the next two holes in 4's,.
lost the thirteenth and halved the next
three holes, both players, making stabs
for 2 on the short seventeenth. On
the eighteenth, Fairbanks sliced and
Becker pulled, so that the balls lay fully
400 yards apart. The seconds were
good, Fairbanks luckily escaping the
trap guarding the green. Becker lost a
stroke with an over-approach, but his
next came within an ace of going down
in 4 for a tie. Fairbanks went down in
two putts, negotiating a stymie by ca
roming from Becker's ball into the cup.
Erman J. Ridgway of Montciair ad
vanced from a keen two up win over
J. D. Foot of Apawamis to a still keener
victory from Robert Hunter of Wee

teenth, lost the fourteenth and won the
fifteenth and sixteenth for the match,

Travis was the gold medalist with a total
of one hundred fifty-one, thirteen strokes
ahead of Topping and Kerr who recorded
one hundred sixty-five each, fin this
connection it is interesting to note that
