Becker of Woodland, Robert Hunter of Wee Burn, and Henry C. Fownes of Oakmont, as the stars. In opening play Fownes won the trophy with a card of seventy-four, six strokes in the lead of Becker who scored eigntv. with Hunter third m eighty-one. N. S. Hard of Pittsburgh, T. A. Kelley of Southern Pines, E. W. Irwin of Kent, D. D. F. McGrew of St. Louis, and W. A. Kinter of Edgeworth, were others who made the first flight. Advancing from a first round victory of four and three over Kelley, Becker found a worthv foe in Fownes. Three up at the turn, with a win of the eighth in 2 and the ninth in 5, Becker won the tenth in 4, lost the eleventh to 2, and the twelfth to 4. Two up at the turn, losing the eighth and winning the ninth, Becker lost the tenth in 7, and halved the eleventh in 3. Hunter tied the score on the twelfth with a 4, and gained the lead on the thirteenth in 3, halving the next four holes in 5, 5, 5, and 4. Halving the eighth in 4 and winning the ninth in the same figure, Hunter turned home two up, but Hurd rallied with wins in 3's on the tenth and eleventh to tie, halved the twelfth in 4, and gained the lead on the thirteenth in the same .figure, halving the fourteenth in 5, Hunter gained the lead again by winning the fifteenth and six teenth in 4 and 5, but he lost the seven teenth to a 4, halved the eighteenth in 5, and won the nineteenth and the match, 45.
