THE PINEHURST OUTLOOK itself. With one hand you could buy out the American multi-millionaires, Morgan and Eockefeller, and still have enough left to talk business with Baron Roths child ! ' It is said that the Tsar was dis pleased at the flippancy of the holder of his purse-string. Whether the story is apocryphal or not, it does not misrepre sent the Tsar 's wealth. ' ' I have seen the famous cathedrals of Europe the noted structures of France, Germany, England, Italy and Turkey but was utterly unprepared for the splendor and brillancy of St. Isaacs, at Petrograd, with its pillars 30 feet high of lapis lazuli and malachite, its altar rails of solid silver, containing half a ton of this precious metal, and its icons of pearls, studded with huge diamonds, sapphires, emeralds and rubies ! H 1 ' His religion is very real to the Russian, and his God is really omnipresent to him; he sees His Spirit everywhere and everywhere acknowledges it with the sign of the cross and the words 'Oh Lord! have mercy or 'Glory be to Thee, Oh Lord!' " If Mr. Gros venor also brings out the surprising fact that Russia has in the neighborhood of 38,000,000 men between the ages of 18 and 44 inclusive, and that it annually has about 1,400,000 boys reaching the age of 18." IMXIIIl ltX NETS THE PACE dolf Equal Mont Scientific Northern CoiiriM May Boaton Trttnucript Even if the weather does continue ex ceedingly favorable for golf in the North, the movement toward the Southern courses has begun and will gather momentum from this time on. There never was a time when the South had more to offer the golfer than it has this winter and its resources, in the matter of links and accommodations, doubtless will be taxed to an unusual degree both because of the natural growth of the game and be cause of the war in Europe. For several years the South has been taking a leaf out of the Northern book in the matter of providing for the golfer, realizing that the better the golfing layout the heavier the patronage. The day has come when the Southern resort is as sured of the desired patronage merely because it has some natural advantages and a Southern climate. The develop ment of golf has brought this change about to a great degree. It might be said that Pinehurst set the pace in regard to providing golf of a character equal to the most scientifically laid out courses of the North, which is what could be expected of a resort super intended by a man like Donald Ross. The courses at Pinehurst, as he laid them out, are considered among the most scien tifically trapped in the country and the placing of their traps has served as a model for many Norhern courses. Otiier courses have not been slow to follow the Pinehurst example, with the result that a golfer goes South nowadays with the knowledge that he is fairly cer tain to find playing conditions fully as taxing upon his golfing skill as a majori ty of the courses which he frequents in the North. In addition, he has his troubles in overcoming the handicap of putting on sand greens and, for those who are in the habit of pitching all their approaches, there is the task of master ing the running approach on many of the Southern links. The Boston Transcript. COME HOUTH YOU TIC till! II iff Shipment of Her Km hire Hog JFroni finliurt to Illinois Editor Outlook: It is gratifying to inform you that I recently closed a deal with Mr. R. R. Luman, of Aurora, Illinois, for a car lot of pure bred Berk shires, consisting of thirty bred gilts and enough fall gilts to fill the car to be shipped to Mr. R. W. Leatherbee at Lake Bluff, Illinois. I believe that this is the greatest deal of pure bred Berkshires ever shipped from North Carolina to Illinois, and it verifies my previous statement that the Pinehurst Berkshires rank among the very best, when we are able to sell a car load of this kind to such a man of judg ment as Mr. Luman. He was very pleased with the herd and offered me the largest price ever offered for the Pinehurst Berkshire Rivals Vaine Maid a Pinehurst bred sow, with the idea of showing her at the Berkshire Congress and the international but as we had already planned to show her I did not feel that we could let her go. If such a man as Mr. Luman consid ers Pinehurst Berkshires to contain qual ities of this type, it certainly should convince southern breeders that it is not necessary to send out West to purchase foundation stock. If the time has come and the tide has turned wherein some of the vast amount of money which has been sent West has begun to flow the other wray it gives me great pleasure to know that the ball has been set rolling by the Pinehurst Farm. Mr. Luman also stated that a piece of corn near the dairy was the best that he had seen on his way from Chicago. If it is possible to produce corn and Berkshire hogs equal to the Corn Belt on $15 an acre land, it will certainly only be a short time before the Sand Hills of North Carolina will become widly known. Very truly yours, A. M. SWINNERTON. Manager Pinehurst Farms. Cartilage InlnH Into Line Carthage has a few ' ' live wires ' ' the historic old town has got a move on. Later we '11 print a story.
