PALM BEACH T B, Hamby, Hobe Sound, Fla., Box 25 FORGING CONNECTING LINK Good Iload Between Washington nd lllchmond Wearing- Completion THE connecting link in the motor journey North or South, between Wash ington and Richmond, promises to be a reality of the near future. H At present there remains less than fifteen miles of road to be constructed, says the Washington Star, and the prin cipal difficulty in the way of the com pletion of the road is that portion in Prince William County, and it is neces sary to provide in some manner approxi mately $12,000 to $15,000 to secure a first-class road from Washington to Rich mond. If this fund were on hand the work could probably be completed by summer time, so that there would be an excellent road all the way through and this important enterprise would thus be consummated. While donations have been made all along the route of the highway, nothing has been donated by the city of Washington. According to Henry W. Anderson, president of the Richmond-Washington highway, it will cost when completed, more than $250,000 for the work. The task has been one of great difficulty and attention has been given to every detail. Tf The route of the highway is through Henrico, Hanover, Caroline, Spotsylvania, Stafford, Prince William, Fairfax and Alexandria counties. Among the dona tions received were several large ones from hotels and clubs in the southern capital. H Progress of work on the high way up to the present time follows: Henrico County. No actual work has been done on the road in this county during the past twelve months. With the exception of a small portion of the road, it is in passable condition. The city of Richmond has recently appropriated the sum of $100,000 to aid in the construc tion of roads in Henrico county in con nection with the annexation proceed ings, and assurances have been given by the chairman of the county board of supervisors that part of this sum will be expended in the improvement of this road to the Hanover line. Hanover County. Several forces have been at work during the entire past year on the road from the Caroline County line to Newman's mill, where it connects with the improved road extending from that point to the Henrico County line. This entire road through Hanover County has been completed with the exception of about 2,500 feet. Caroline County. The road through Caroline County from Hanover line through Chilesburg to the Spotsylvania line has been completed and is in good condition. Spotsylvania County. The road through Caroline to Spotsylvania court house has been constructed during the past year. A good gravel road from Spotsyl vania courthouse to Fredericskburg was constructed a few years since and is in good' condition. That portion of the road from Fredericksburg to the bridge across the Rappahanock River, has. 1 teen constructed by the Automobile Club of Fredericksburg and is in good condition. Stafford County. The road through Stafford has been constructed from the Rappahannock River to a point a short distance beyond Mountain View, where the county and state funds were ex hausted. m The Richmond-Washington highway Corporation arranged with tho county authorities to have the convicts, used in the construction of this road, be gin work at Chappawamsic Creek and build south to connect with the improved road, the corporation supplying the funds for this work and the convicts doing the labor. It is believed that the corpora tion can provide funds to complete the road through Stafford County, which will give a first-class road to the. Prince William line. Prince William County. Several sections of the highway have been con structed in Prince William County. The road between Neabsco Creek and Chap pawamsic Creek, four and one-half miles, is graded, but only graveled three and one-half miles, thus leaving a section be tween these two creeks of four miles which has not been graded and one mile which has not been graveled. Between Chap pawamsic Creek and Occoquan there is a section of two and one-half miles which has not been graded nor graveled. The state highway commissioner estimates that it will require about $12,000 to com plete this road through Prince William County, as the construction is heavy and the material is not readily available. Fairfax County - -The County of Fair fax during the past year provided a bond issue for the improvement of the road from Alexandria south to Pohick Church. This will leave about one and one-half miles of road between Pohick Church and Lorton station unimproved. From that point south to Occoquan the road has been improved by the reformatory of the District of Columbia, located near Occoquan. It is estimated that it will require about $3,300 to complete thi& road, and efforts will be made to secure the co-operation of the reformatory and county authorities to accomplish it. Alexandria County. A good road haa been constructed between Washington and Alexandria without aid from the funds, of the corporation and the same is now in good condition. "PINEUVRIT IH CUlOWEJKGt!'
