lltmm THE PINEHURST OUTLOOK mm LEONARD TUFTS, "OWNER" Shibboleth That Has Lost Meaning Its Tli Emancipation of Pineliurnt Kvidncvd lj tb Ownership Of tliwt Village IT IS perhaps more in sorrow than in rejoicing that ve chronicle the passing of the first phase of our city. Every fellow looks upon the past with a reminiscent fondness, and regards the future in some measure ;is an interloper. ''Progress" is all very well. But in its triumphant course it rides over many a cherished landmark and iiaint old custom, and often enough fills with wistful regret the soul of the casual ,'ind gentle lovers of things ancient and pleasant. Among those conceptions in our own village is that of Leonard Tufts, Owner. Tor years the infant golf links and the budding shrubbery and the cottage we inhabited and the very water in the well signified to us not the existance of a com munity, but an hospitable villa, the property of one Mr. Tufts, where avc visited once in so often, and whence we carried pleasant memories, as from a Private Estate. And this was true, as witnessed by a legend probably seen by two-thirds of the people of the country, (the rest cannot read or only read German) Leonard Tufts, Owner. Those reflections came to us upon an astonishing afternoon when picking up one of the Pinehurst Announcements Ave felt a vivid sense of loss. It was much Hie same feeling one Avould have if he were to open the editorial page of the Transcript and find no mention of the weather in the first column, or to put on Ms shoes and find no sole thereunder. Directly it came to us. It had disap peared, this ancient expected sign had disappeared. "We rushed to Mr. Tufts in his sanctum above the turmoil and inquired why. His answer Aas sad and full of reminiscent fondness. Hocause, malhcureusement, he was no longer owner. Any more than I am owner f fSault San Marie, or the Acropolis. He handed me tAvo things, with the air of a widower giving his only daughter away b the Red Cross. One Avas a map of the I'inehurst of Leonard Tufts. His own, Die yearling fancy. It Avas dated 1905. ''he other was a picture of the present I'inehurst grown beyond control of the parent hand, a town, even as Athol, Mass. And the other was the names of those that are now joint owners, which reads no longer like the proprietors of a villa by 'he sea. A tax list rather. Here they ne. Let us say requiescat to Leonard a ufts, Owner, and merely put it down for fhe antiquary to discover in times to -ome, that this village, or city, or memory, whatever it then will be, was once the dream of one man and the property of another. After The Hound George Leach led the brave array be hind the pack out again on Tuesday in search of a brisk' ride and the joys of the sandy paths and the trail of the little red fox. The party started from the Carolina about eight o'clock, and went down the Linden road by the Waring estate and the Dana 's new clearing, and over the hills and the branches of Horse 's Creek. Brer Fox must have got wind of the sport, for no signs of him later than the day before were found, and these made hard following. However all hands had a good twenty-mile ride and Avere quite ready for lunch. Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Pearson lea the van. C. T. (JrocKer ara, mr. aim ivj.iB. George Leach, T. And of all Christmas gifts, few so appropriately , express the enduring; quality of the Christmas sen timent, as a gift of Gorham Silverware. Its lasting character serves not only to commem orate one Christmas, but renews through many an niversaries, its message of goodwill. It is important to remember, however, that silver ware without the Gorham insignia and name is like Christmas without mistletoe and holly. This famous trade mark will give the simplest si!
