both at the Eoyal Opera and Covent Gar den, also at many concerts in England and and Ireland as well as on the continent. Her first appearance in America was in New York at the Russian Fete at the Biltmore and since then she has sang many times in New York and other cities. We will all be there. And when the last faint notes of the Humoresque has died away, and left us tenderly dreaming of the pleasantest and sweetest things the universe has to offer during the season of Good Will Towards Men, even the critic will forgive my ignorance of his vocabulary. New Year'i at Wynoutli Height The very essence of life is a kindly, hearty association with friends and neigh bors, and is evidenced by frequent assem bling of the squire and the yeomen, the parson and the pedagogue, our host of the tavern and the master of the hounds, Billy home from college and the Sweet Sixteen accompanied by bashful Joel who drives the rural post. Even we that lay waste our powers getting and spending are prone to admit tli is by the few treasures we display a volume of Sir Koger on the parlor table; a print of the Doctor stirring the punch and smoking a long stem pipe in Laughing red-coated company lief ore a great Yule log, entitled 4 'After the Hunt," which hangs in the smoking room; our only effort at harmony, which is an ecstatic base- to John Peel, displayed on those rare occasions when the girls have a house party and a member of the Glee Club over Sunday.. A community is either a boyish happy company, or nothing at all. Either the Sunday school picnic is a jubilee, the baseball game a public holiday, school breaking a gathering of generations and the hunt a field day of universal sport, or the vicinity is uninhabitable. In our slow progress towards the millenium a break down is more potent than a gold mine, and a quartette than a regiment. That is why we that love our fellow men, and the humor of the world and the spirit of Christmas hail with delight the assembling of the sportmen and our neighbors for the First Sandhill Hunt. Jim Boyd has mobilized the hounds from the glens and the woods, and the old woodsmen wise to the trails and the bar riers, famous hunters from Virginia and the Hunt Clubs, including Rodman Wan namaker and his fast mounts, George Leach and the Pinehurst pack, and those happy in the saddle his friends and neighbors from the hills of Carthage to the swamps of Keyser, old acquaintances and young hearts, to celebrate New Year's Pay on the Weymouth Estate at Southern Pines. Dan Lemons is even now busy about the fences and ditches over miles of broken country where the first drag has been laid out through fields and pine groves, by streams and wooded dells and hill -tops overlooking the broad countryside. Young enthusiasts arc being fitted to red coats and leather puttecs, fit to kill, while out on the waters of Drowning Creek old sports men of the school of Daniel Boone who can count their brushes by the hundred, are taking their ancient horns from the chimney jam. Litle girls whose riding ambitions are confined to hobby horses are tying blue ribbons in their hair pre paratory to taking a grand stand seat on the top rail to see the double jump by the old Shaw homestead. Not even the Board of Trade or the Bankers Convention can boast so distin guished and complete a patronage as will constitute the sponsors of the Sandhill Hunt assembled for breakfast at Wey mouth Heights this merry New Year's morning. And thereafter when the dogs are loosed and the chase is on every soul in the region with an animal to ride or a mind to run or to shoot, or to cut across country and watch, or to join the glad throng, or to only listen to the music of the pack is welcome to be on hand and exchange greetings with his fellow men. Crocker Iluyi a Fai m Mr. Charles T. Crocker of Fitchburg, a familiar figure in Pinehurst and an. old friend of the neighboring plantations, has recently added to his dominion on Sandy Run (a small plantation house) 100 acres just cleared and made ready for cultiva tion by Emery Smith. He has arranged to have Smith, who is the best cotton farmer in the sacred circle, to plant it in the staple for him next Summer. This is the sixth large farm to be opened within two miles of the village since last March, the others being Mr. Waring 's, the Danas', the Pages', Mr. Ehrehart's, Mr. Bruhn's orchard, and Charlie Mason's new purchase. JEcIioh From Antiquity Martial Book 3, Epigram No. 47 ("Capena grandi porta qua pluit gutta Urbem petebat Baseus? Imrae rus ibat.") Below the Jackson Spring hotel . Which adds to Leonard's roubles, There is a dingy, dusty rock Whence healing water bubbles, And near it runs a weary road Which Leonard built of clay, Whereon goes Roger's lumbering load Of crops which surely pay. His Ford o'erflows with pork and beef, Peas, corn and sweet potatoes, E'en cauliflower; and on his arms Are baskets of tomatoes. Oh bliss of dwelling on the soil! I would we air could do it! Is Roger coming from his farm? Hell, no! he's going to it! -Clyde L. Davis, Translator. To Cxteud Hit Orchard Mr. J. II. Ehrehart, who is doing so much towards developing the country west of Pinehurst on the Jackson Springs high way, arrived at the Carolina last night for the Christmas celebration and to deter mine the location of the railroad siding and the roads and confer with his neigh bors upon the best plan for the extension of their mutual enterprise of making this a center for the culure and shipment of peaches. Carter JBvatA II 1 Own II cord Last week he established a new mark for the number one course, twice doing it in 73 once with Mr. Allen and once with Mr. Hunter. On Monday he set after his own record and humbled himself by one stroke, finishing in 72 thirty-seven out and thirty-five in six better than Bogey and three above par.
