POWDER HEI&ULES 'I POWDER HERCULES Ato POWDER feeling qualities equally displayed in his rendition of 'The Sally Gardens' and of the less known but charming composi tion by Graham Peel, 'The Early Morn ing. ' That Mr. Harris is also fully capa ble of properly handling music of a more dramatic type was convincingly shown in his arias from La Boheme and L'Afri caine. Mme. Lyska's dramatic voice, with its fine low tones, gave us a real treat in her Dvorak Czech Song, Gipsy Song by Brahms, Quitter's 'Come Back' and the Habanera from Carmen, all of which were enthusiastically applauded. Besekirsky's rendering of Sarasate's Zigeunerweisan was delightful. In this, and in the Cavatina, with its fine clear tones; in Arensky's Senerade which was played with both delicacy and verve; and in Rachmaninoff's Dance, winch brought out his remarkable technique, he gave us of his best. TIIJE MIDiniVTER HANDICAP (January 1123) The Oreateol Trap Shooting: Event Ever II eld in This Country Entries for the great Midwinter Trap Shooting Handicap are coming in daily in constantly increasing numbers and many of the best known, shots of the whole country are already enrolled for this classic event. A greater number of trophies will be offered than ever before and the added money now exceeds two thousand seven hundred and fifty dollars. Neither the Grand American nor any other trap shooting event held in this country offers any such inducements to the National experts, and the great contest promises to set a mark in the number of contestants, in marksmanship and in at tendance that will remain a record for some time to come- Social Service Committee A Social Service Committee has been formed by ladies at Pinehurst to systema tize the helpful work to be done in this section. The ladies of the Committee ask that cases of need be reported direct to the Field Workers, Mrs- T. A. Cheatham or Miss Helen Child, so that the work to be done shall not be unnecessarily dupli cated nor those requiring assistance be overlooked. The members of the Com mittee and all those wishing to assist them will meet every Friday at 10 a. m. at the house of the president, Mrs. P. W. Whittemore, Village Green East. Every one interested is invited to help, either actively or by contributions or in both ways. The Younger Con ting-en t Foregathered at Mrs. Leonard Tuft's hospitable cottage on Monday evening and had a royal time of it. Among the young people present were Miss Andrews and the Messrs. Andrews, Ealph Ogden, Miss Brewer, Messrs. Kelleher and Jenks, John Skinner, Miss Moore, Eandall Bliss and of course Miss Esther Tufts and Richard Tufts. A Busy and Exciting Day Starts the New Tear The big Masquerade Ball at the Carolina, December 31, 1915, to January 1, 1916. Over at Mr. James Boyd's Weymouth Estate, Southern Pines, the First Community Hunt. A tally-ho will carry over a num ber of people from Pinehurst to view the event and will start from the Carolina. On the links, the final round of the Annual Holiday Week Tour nament, on Number Three course. The Vlllag Jhritnia Tree It was Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, Peace on Earth, Good Will Toward Men, at the Community House on Mon day night. The number of children present would have ' ' delighted ' ' the heart of our stren uous ex-President and it was evident that Pinehurst is raising up a native citizen ship that will be equal to any plans that the Board of Trade may devise for the development of the Sandhill section. Santa Claus was there with a generous supply of toys and candy and the spark ling Christmas Tree groaned under the weight of the many presents. A most in teresting program of songs and recita tions was given by the children of the vil lage and the large audience joined in singing some of the numbers. It was a time of gladness and good cheer and best of all there was evidence of a growing community spirit that will mean much for the village in the coming years. The group of Community buildings are ministering to the social and religious life of the people and efforts are being made to widen and enlarge their usefulness. Plans for the future include : Eeligious services at the Community House on Sun day evenings, the keeping open of the Community Club House daily from 3 p. m. to 5 p. m. and 8 p. m. to 11 p. m. and from time to time interesting free lec tures by prominent public speakers. T. A. Cheatham. moving- Pictures "Excuse Me," the film adaptation of Rupert Hughe's farce which ran for two Broadway seasons, is the offering at the Carolina Theatre at the reopening of the theatre on Wednesday evening. This is the first of a series of Broadway successes which are being produced by Henry W. Savage for the famous Gold Booster pro gram. On Friday, January 7th, Lou Tellegen appears in "The Unknown," a tense photodrama of adventure and life on the great Saraha Desert. "The Unknown" is founded on I. A. R. Wylie's novel, ' ' The Red Mirage. ' ' Maclyn Arbuckle is coming along afterwards in "The .Re form Candidate." The plays mentioned are a sufficient indication of the class of entertainment -which will be offered by the new man agement throughout the season. The tickets are 25 and 20 cents. n
