Saturday, February 13, lOlO Capitalizing- the Future It is the greatest delight of strong men to harvest the ideas of their contempor aries, and put them into, local practice. It is our especial good fortune to be, sit uated where strong men congregate, and that there are those at the helm of our affairs who have the wisdom to profit thereby. Eambling through the corridors of that famous hostelry, the Carolina, we have been exhorted to confine our dia tribes to the immortal game of golf, and to desist from a discussion of philosophy. But the law of self preservation is great er than advice. We ask you this. Who on earth wants even to play golf in a neighborhood where nobody takes the trouble to paint the houses or clear out the gutters or plant so much as a cactus bush by the way home ? Answer. Nobody. So the leaders of the public thought assembled last Saturday at the Club House, the shrine dedicated to the score board and the niblic, the treacherous bunker and mental hazard, to consider the practical and commercial value of beauty, and its application to the land scape the Lord provided us withal. And to take counsel with the learned Gov ernor of Pennsylvania, Warren Manning, wizard, and Bion Butler, the Nestor of the Sandhills. The proposition was this. Is it not advisable while land is still plentiful and prices cheap, to acquire 120 feet on the side of every foot of road within thirty miles of the village, and to plant every yard of it with stately trees and shrub bery, and clear it out, that for genera tions to come all men may remark upon the shade and the beauty of the drives and the ideals and executive capacity of our people. This is not a thing of little moment, or that will brook delay. The city of Harrisburg bought for millions of dol lars what Jim Boyd's ancestors offered them not long since for a song. And just to put it into parks and trees. All we need to do is to take the trouble to get the land. The people will give it if they are told for what, in a sympathetic and intelligent manner. The counsel of war was held by Eoger Derby, Leonard Tufts, Henry A. Page and Prank Page of Aberdeen, John Mc Queen, Dr. Theodore Lyman of Boston, Jim Boyd, E. E. Wiley of Southern Pines, Clyde Llewellyn Davis, Governor Brumbaugh, Bion Butler and divers others. The conclusion was not in favor of notes but of action. Not a resolution but a campaign. The Moore County Park Association is to receive the reinforce ment of the Board of Trade, and to open the battle at once for two things. One is the land along all the highways in the district. The other is the time and thought and effort of every citizen to execute the plan to be worked out by Mr. Manning, the rejuvenator of Harrisburg. That this is not an idle dream was wit nessed by the performance at the Farm Life School. The school grounds were laid out on paper. Who, then, was to plant the shrubs and cut the walks and gather the rubbish, and make the pic ture? There is the rub most anywhere. Not here. The farmers in the offing, Bill and Jim and you and I, the people of the neighborhood turned out en masse, and DID it. Of a Saturday. And there it is, a joy forever, this very day. The same way with our highway parks. We will do it ourselves. The conference was only to make the plan, and hatch the idea. But you, my friend, if you will enjoy your ride the more under the shade of the spreading green bay tree, you might help a little. If only by saying God Speed. ihl Carter It is with great personal regret that Pinehurst learns that Phil Carter is go ing back home. During the last two months he has come to be the leader and the embodiment of the golf of which we are so proud. He has established the records that may stand for ages on our courses, and won every match and trophy offered since he has been here save only one. The principal thing is that wher ever the foremost of all gentleman's games is known, around the world and back again, he has become identified with our game here. Without assuming leadership he has become the pre-eminent leader without comment or effort he has since his arrival become the most formidable coming play er in America, and has set us a standard of excellence on the links, and sports manship in play which we may be proud to live up to for many years. Infants now in their cradles will in time to come relate the remarkable story of the youth ful champion who went out in thirty three in defiance of all Donald Eoss' cunning in the placing of pitfalls and trenches, and came back in thirty-three oblivious of lakes and canons and moun tains, and the wonder of all the world. They will not forget how he defeated the veteran Whittemore, even though he had to drive the ball home in one shot to do so. And least of all will they forget that without a peer in the country still he has no criticism to offer, no excuse to make, no ego to scatter, no vanity to display. . He leaves with our very heartiest good wishes, our admiration, our silverware and our gratitude. " Glad to see you I've a place in my squad for you."
