Flaking;
Beside the ancient plantation bell, now
famous in lyric and song, over the great
fireplace in Doctor Achorn's study at
Pine Bluff, headquarters for the lovers
of Forest and Stream in the South, hangs
a picture. Probably it would astonish
the casual follower of the fly and the
reel, confident in the opinion that good
fishing is an exclusive' attribute of the
Swift River valley or the Canadian lakes.
It is a string of bass, lordlings of the
Lumbee Eiver, running from three to
ten pounds, captured from the precarious
birchbark reeling through swift currents,
a memento of a-day's fishing that would
satisfy any man's heart.
I had a notion I would go further into
this fishing business. It leads men into
still places, and rejoices the soul. The
day I was there the doctor, who is a
famous woodsman, was planning to put
his canoe into the fast stream iust below
the Drowning Creek Plantation, and run
tli rough the wild country down to the
bridge, a trip never taken by man since
the wild Cherokee left the shores of
Samarcand. Unless indeed the boys of
Henderson's school have been down
through the brake on a shingle.
A little discussion developed the fact
that this region is not unknown to those
wise to the ways of the fishes.
Dr. W. C. Kendall of the United States
Department of Fisheries, knows the
ground well, and is himself more devoted
to it than any other place in the country.
His opinion is as final as anyone's can
be. It appears that he is strongly in
favor of stocking the tributaries of the
Lumbee Eiver Horses Creek that rises
just beyond the dairy, the Devil's Gut,
that runs by Aberdeen, Deep Creek and
Jackson's Creek and Sandy Run with
rainbow trout, the king of the Califor
nia waters, and the brown trout, fighter
at the fly. The bass and the pickerel, the
old fresh water shark, now so abundant
in these waters, should be protected.
On these two plans depend the survival
and expansion of one of our very great
est resources. Until recently nobody
knew the limitless opportunities for
camping and paddling and fishing, , life
in the open and sport in the forest that
stood at our door. But the country boy
knew. And above all it is his. But to
use and not to destroy. It is now his
custom to advance against a fish dinner
armed with dynamite, traps, nets, and
even buckets, with which to dip up the
kings of the deep pools about the dams
at the old miUs. First he drains the
pond. Then he crates the finny fighters
without a chance.
The regulation of this sport, the pro
tection of the fish, their propagation and
the presentation to the public of the end
less sport and recreation to be found in
the game is a function of the Board of
Trade. It should and hence will be
done. Not only because we must pre
serve for our own pleasures and for the
pleasure and exercise and imagination, of
our children the fascination of the wild
and the pristine glory of the river, but
because it will in time become one of
the great drawing cards for tourists and
travellers
Not much is required. The importance
of the game laws in relation to fishing as
well as to phooting must be brought
before the council of the allied towns,
and to the understanding of our people,
and a small fund assembled and put in
the hands of Dr. Achorn to provide the
stock and the experienced help necessary
to introduce these rainbow trout and the
calico bass for the glory of the Sandhills.
The Sound of the Horn
and the spirit of John Peel were again
abroad in the land on the frosty morn
ing of February 14th,- and the sports
men and the sportswomen rode forth on
the chase in the wake of the master of
hounds, the Pinehurst pack, and the wary
fox. This time the cry was not to be
denied. The trail was struck fresh as a
flower just outside of the village, and a
fast ride brought the chase in full view.
Miss Sarah G. Park of Radnor and
W. R. Breck of the Westchester Hunt
Club were in at the death and brought
the trophy of the chase triumphantly
home with them.
