To the .Rescue The Governor of North Carolina has set aside Friday next for the particular attention of the people of the State to consider their obligation and pleasure as Christian and kindly folks to the stricken population of Belgium. It is an unusual pronouncement from the executive man: sion; but it is an unusual circumstance. The reports and first hand information provided reveals a condition among the women and children of the ruined country winch makes it absolutely impossible for us to play and laugh and put our money m the bank, and to complacently contem plate three thousand miles of the unhar vested sea between us and devastation, without a feeling of heartlessness. It has been truly said that hardly a human being lives who cannot be de pended upon if he is really trusted. In the last ditch even the poorest of the race will stand by to save a drowning man, or to champion the helpless in dis tress. We are in that position now. The sad eyes and hungry hearts of many a woman stranded far from home are turned to us in confident and personal appeal. This is not figurative, or rhetori cal. We we moved to write this sup plement to the Governor's. appeal by in cidents personally known to us, almost too pitiful to relate. American girls nursing in Beligum write home that they must have clothing, or money. That they must, their very honor depends upon it. For when they are appealed to by destitute and hopeless mothers, they have said "Be of good cheer. It will be all right. I promise it will be all right. When they know that you are naked and suffering and driven from home, and in such pitiful way, my people will send you relief. AH I have to do is to tell them. I promise." And it is inconceivable that it should not be so.' In their place you and I would say the same thing. It is our right a part of our tradition and in heritance, to depend on the charity and support and loyal spirit of our own peo ple, in times of great stress or pitiful circumstance. And so they say, these girls, that all will be well when America hears the call. Now we know very well that millions have been sent from here to Belgium, and that even the most vital appeal can become stale by repitition, or long dura tion. From the point of view of the jour nalist it is no longer of interest that millions fall dying before the scourge. But we have no right to neglect it for that reason, or to fail with all our power to bring home to those with long rolls and scant worries the first duty in the world to the helpless and the oppressed. To make the matter concrete and effec tive it is best done as the Governor sug gests, at one time, consciously by the community. Friday is the day. On that day we either do or do not listen to the appeal made to us so hopefully and with such faith and confidence, and we do or do not fulfill the promises made by our confident countrywomen who depend upon us to make good their word. Of course at bottom our natures are very much alike. If we saw things as they are seen by the Bed Cross in Flan ders, or if you had read what we have, and knew not only the desperate need, which only the private citizens of this country can possibly fill, but the pitiful gratitude and confidence thousands of wistful and gentle souls had in us, you would not only send a check to E. Alexis Taylor, 23 Haywood Street, Asheville. You would move all heaven and earth to triple the amount, and would stop all else to urge the pity of it, and the help for it, on all men. PIIOCLAJ1AIIOI Belgium Ray, March 17. 11)10 ' ' Whereas, deep distress and misery ex ists in Belgium and Northern France. Three millions of women and children are in dire need of food and clothing, and "We have already given generously to these destitute people, but there yet ex ists an alarming shortage of necessary clothing, and ijrE " Glad to see you i f I've a place in my :S.squad for you." YOU ARE WELCOME AT THE TRAPS YOU'LL find the "glad hand" and a spirit of good fellowship wait ing for you on your arrival at any of the 5,000 Gun Clubs scattered over the country. Trapshooting is the national gun fest, a sport that appeals to men and has the approval of women. The flight of the clays makes sport for the vacation days.
