The Children' Hour
The prettiest sight to be seen in Pine
hurst is the playground in the grove by
the deer park every afternoon. For many
years this has been the tabernacle where
gathered the children of the village to
make faces at the Chinese pheasant and
share their sweetmeats with the grey
squirrels and marvel at the peacocks
spreading their thousand-eyed tails to
the sun.
But lately to this symphony has been
added the kettle drum and the fiddle.
Thomas' Orchestra have waked the echos
of the sylvan nursery, and added harmony
to peace and innocence. The dancing
pavilion used for the moonlight revelries
has become acquainted with the patter
of small and vigorous feet, busy with
ring-around-a-rosy or the daisy choir, to
any tune whatsoever, provided it be
lightsome and gay.
And never before have we seen such a
congress of young folk, from tots fresh
from the cradle, content with the most
meagre of adventure, close to the nurse's
apron strings, to sturdy little urchins
with the war paint and demeanor of
Geronimo, doing Dodd's ride on a broom
stick to the terror of all things feathered
and furred.
Politics
In the days when the wrld is full of
wars and rumor of wars, it may not be
out of place for even a modest chronicle
of neighborhood events to record for its
visitors the sentiments of the district on
the most vital National matters that
have arisen since the death of Abraham
Lincoln.
dates is made in the advertising columns
of this paper. . Mr. Union L. Spence, one
The representative of our people in
Congress has refused to run again, al
though unopposed and trusted by the
whole district, because he knew they
did not and would not agree with his
personal leanings towards yielding our
rights on the sea.
The people are keenly alive to, two
facts :
1. That it took the entire army of the
United States to reach from Columbus to
Gernara in pursuit of a cattle thief and
five hundred road agents.
2. That the National possessions of
which they are most actively and enthusi
astically proud at this moment are the
seventh and tenth cavalry and a graduate
of West Point fifty-seven years old.
They have read a telegram from a gen
tleman of Baltimore to the President of
the United States upon the occasion of
his daughter being blown up on a ferry
boat by responsible parties in the North
Sea.
There are various gentlemen now about
to run for the vacant seat in Congress.
The announcement of one of these candi
of our best known and most capable
citizens is another.
Before it is possible for anyone in the
district to comment upon either their
qualification or chance for the position
it will be necessary for the candidates
themselves to comment in definite terms
upon the facts before mentioned.
Sandhill Coif Aanoclatlon
The Pinehurst Country Club and one
of the Pinehurst Golf Courses will remain
open all Summer for the benefit of those
residents of the Sandhills who wish to
play during that period. The suggestion
comes from Mr. Howard Phillips and Mr.
H. G. Waring, and was met in a cordial
spirit by Mr. Tufts.
It has the support and approval of
the residents of the Sandhills, and will
be accomplished on a democratic plan
as follows:
The members of the Sandhills who wish
this privilege will pay the bare cost of
keeping the grass cut and the greens
swept, and a boy at the Club House, the
use of the course to be free. Mr. Tufts
has agreed to keep up the course for. ten
dollars a week, and the boy will cost
something like five.
The organization of this Community
Summer Golf Club is already accom
plished. It will be run on a mutual and
co-operative basis. The members 'will
divide this expense. ' Obviously the more
members the less the expense will be.
Everyone who wishes to join are requested
to send their application to Ralph W.
Page, Pinehurst, N. C.
There will be a regular tournament
schedule, and refreshments of a simple
sort at the Club, and assurance of part
ners and the best course in the South.
Mr. Clark Break a Record
The Octogenarian golf record held by
Mr. D. N.' Clark of Woodbridge was
beaten by himself this week on the first
nine holes of number two course. The
best previous figure had been a 50. By
holing a fifty-foot putt at the sixth
green for a three, and consistent play all
down the course he made a 47, a record
that we predict will not soon be beaten
in his class. The card shows:
6 7 5 5 5 3 5 6 5-47
