M. 9.45 P. M, The Carolina Orchestra The other day among the cars parked in profusion in front of the Carolina Theatre we observed a number from Aber deen and the surrounding country. This might not cause astonishment, except for the fact that the Paramount Program which shows Mary Pickford and John Barrymore, Geraldine Farrar and all the leading lights of Moviedom here at Pine hurst is also run at the Princess Theatre at Southern Pines, patronized for years by the countryside. Since every phenominon has an expla nation we sought the owners of these ben zine buggies for the reason why they had left their usual haunt for the Pinehurst I exhibit. Their answer was uninimous. Because, they said, the pictures here are well accompanied. Now it is not at all a mere matter of having music warbling on as a side issue tot he play. Charlie Picquet runs these things, and is reputed to know as much about the world of plays and players and the screen dramas as any man in the game. He says that never in his life has he heard a picture so well played, so truly followed and interpreted as it is done by Wiley Pope Swift's orchestra. With a mind to determine for myself, in the capacity of the casual public I took special notice last night, while they un folded before my astonished gaze all the pirates, pistols, villains and desperate escapes of Mary Johnson's furious novel, 'To Have and To Hold." And I add my verdict to the professors. The char acters in the presence of King James walked to the strains of God Save the King; the salvos from the pirate ship were made audible by the base drum; the softest of drearmy waltzes added romance to the courting and all the asso ciations and magic of music was added to the illusion of a varied and stirring drama. This is not the only hearty apprecia tion of the orchestra's contribution to a happy and pleasant season that we have heard. The Sunday evening cncert at the Carolina has become an institution and a tradition welcomed and attended by an ever increasing company who understand and enjoy a program selected and ren dered by a master. Last Sunday's will serve as an example and sufficient indi cation to those who can judge of such matters : Hungarian Overture Osokonay Kener Bela Andante from Fifth Symphony Tschaikowski Suite Algerienne Saint-Saens Marche Militaire Francaise Reverie du Soir Cathedral Chimes (by request) Arnold Scene de Ballet DeBeriot Piano Solo Second Nocturne , Leschetizky Mr. Robert Blake Excerpts from the Opera "Manon" Massenet Hymn God be with You Tomer (Guests will please join in singing) The Village it Delig-htvd to JLearn that Mrs. Dorothy Campbell Hurd, the famous golf player and for years a leader on the Pinehurst links, has determined to cast her lot permanently with the growing colony for the Winter time, and has pur chased a plot of ground east of the village green, between Dr. J. S. Brown and the Girls' School, on which she intends to build quarters for next season. Meantime the village is growing with astonishing rapidity. H. P. Hotchkiss of New Haven has purchased the Walnut Cottage, this year occupied by Mr. George Orvis. George T. Dunlop of Summit has broken the ground for his new residence, Donald Parson and George A. Magoon have their contracts under way, and the teams are at this minute hauling the material for Ambassador Page's-plantation house on the hill beyond the Warings. im t vjitiu iu sec jruu . l'v a nlnrf In m v ?
