CAPTAIN Ian Hay of
the English Army, the
distinguished author of
' The First Hundred
Thousand,' ' one of the
vital books upon the
world war, and one of
the great forces . in
mobilizing the British
Empire for the struggle, has come to
.America to give our people some concep
tion of the meaning and gigantic propor
tions of the battle of the Nations. He is
coming to Pinehurst about Christmas
time, and will give an intimate first hand
account of life at the front and the
battle of the trenches. The date will be
announced by The Outlook as soon as
definitely determined.
SWINNEIITOX'S SUH POISE
(Concluded from page four)
two thoroughbreds made the 9-16th over
a heavy track in 1.01 and had the spec
tators guessing the whole way. But here
again Hurd was vindicated, and sent his
new pony back to the stable with the blue
decoration.
A SUCCESSFUL STRATEGEM
Romulus, driver extraordinary to the
ox-stall and the canery, again showed
the value of strategem and cunning on
the track, to the almost insane delight of
the multitude. He had entered his favor
ite goat in bitter competition against the
aristocratic and fleet Billy of Little Boy
Blue. At the outset it was apparent that
the usual procedure might prove fatal,
so he hit upon the expedient of making
his steed run away. Anyone knows a
runaway goat is faster than any ordinary
Billy travelling for his constitution.
What matter if the pace become so wild
that the chariot turn over, and now right
side up and now upside down swirl
through the dust to the howling of the
mob. Thus are victories won, in Voodoo
land.

Ill Denomination
Frank Butler tells a story of the time
when he was with the Wild West Show.
''Von know we had to get a lot of
Indians, and the Government was mighty
busy with the red tape, and asked all
manner of questions to show they would
get their salaries paid and be brought
back again, and everything you ever
heard of. Well, one time I had to go
out to the Standing Creek reservation to
round up sixty braves for the Deadwood
stunt. I had a fellow along as an inter
preter. His name was Bronco Bill, a
cowboy. He had married a squaw, and
could talk the lingo. When he got done
with all these million questions we had to
ask every Indian, the Government fellows
tood a hand at Bronco, and commenced
pumping him to see if he was fit to be
an interpreter, and on the level.
"About the third question they asked
him was, 'What is your denomination?'
"This was a new one on Bronco, and
he studied a long while before venturing
an answer. Now the Governor had given
him a very fine six shooter, the pride of
his life and the one darling of his soul
more to him than squaw and tepee, or
the whole damned range. So Bill studies
a minute, brightens up and answers
proudly;
" 'Smith and Wesson.' "
