the spirit of play. The roll call includes captains of industry and leaders from many sections of the country, whose coming is a compliment and a tribute which we shall endeavor to deserve. The idea is as contagious as laughter. The old settlers in the region, and the plantation folk that are the backbone of other aspects of the Sandhill idea have within a twelvemonth caught the lilt of this play germ, took over the golf links for the Summer, and are even now in ever increas ing numbers to be found in the swatfest every afternoon. The idea is by no means con fined to Pinehurst. Only last week the smoldering call for a real camp upon the river broke out like the measles upon a dozen men at once, and the village of A party of influential gentlemen from the confines of Boston bucolic borough of the South. It is reflected in the grin of many a black caddie, and the children who rustle our Christmas mistletoe from the recesses of the swamps. As usual the greatest force is the silent one. It is not even the Board of Trade. Go down to the community house next Tuesday evening and see the children of the village make merry around the Christmas tree singing the songs on which the Republic is founded, and repeating as axioms the first principles on which our literature is built. Go over to Taylorville or to Jackson Hamlet and see how the emancipated chil dren of the old plantation carol and scream with delight. Christ mas is not a date. It is a con ception, a memory, an inheri tance. Under the leadership of the Reverend T. A. Cheatham this conception is rendered a living rs r , Jf' .,J THE IDEAL HUNTING COUNTRY. ON THL HEADWATERS OF THE LUMBEE RIVER Pine Bluff is in a canoeing frenzy, caught the fever following Vance Adams, our most distinguished gentleman of leisure and follower of the greenwood, after the fes tive Bob-White. And because people demanded it we race our horses and our mules and our goats, the throughbreds and careless bred, and make a trotting holiday every Wednesday. Colonel Swigert got the notion but it was the in evitable result of the atmosphere where we are learning to take a delight in our fun, and to get rid of our humors in the sunshine. Ours is not a selfish play. It is a living basis of the good will and entente cordial that is spreading from village to farm, from mer chant to planter, from erstwhile Northern capitalists to their present steady neighbors in a force throughout the countryside, with the assistance of the good ladies of the village. Go out into the country any day Christ mas week. Wherever you find an old plantation those simple ances tral homesteads of the sturdy Scotch, you will find not only a welcome but find the spirit of the holiday reflected in the won derful displays of mince pies, and plum puddings, and chocolate cakes and the keen anticipation in the eyes of the children. The Craddock has been opened for the year and Mr. and Mrs. Frank S. Danforth welcomed for the Winter in the village. Mr. Danforth's sister and mother are expected to aug ment the household after the holidays.
