Carolina Hotel since last we cele
brated the New Year, and cash
dividends ranging from 20 to 75
percent have been paid to stock
holders of the older orchards. We
pride ourselves most that we do
this business as a team that all
the information any of us have
the rest have that we make a
community reputation and not an
orchard reputation, and that any
stranger is welcome to join. But
we do not sneeze at the profits.
An Educational Centre
Enormous advance has been
made in our facilities for teach
ing the youth of our land for
open. Dr. William Hill, builder
of practical farm schools, is not
only making our Farm Life
School the best training camp in
the South, but is giving it a Na
tional reputation. The Derby
Memorial School on Drowning
Creek is already being used as a
model for Consolidated ,Rura
Schools by the Department of
Education at Washington. And
now Dr. Demerritt, to whom a
large part of the best element in
Boston is indebted for an educa
tion, is establishing himself at
Jackson Springs.
All of which we mention onlv
to show that we appreciate the

bringing up our next generation
with the ideals and practical
sense necessary to continue the
final making of a livable country.
We have at our command now
more than our proportion of the
educators of proved ability. Eric
Parson, recently master at Gro
ton, a follower of Peabody, has
established his boys' school at
Pinehurst. Dr. C. Hanford Hen
derson has an ideal place a few
miles from here in the Valley of
the Lumbee, which he calls
Marianfield. It is there we hear
our best music and perceive the
influence of a life spent in the
real forces of life, and are work
ing for them for all we are worth.
And if you believe a concerted
community effort can make any
place into what it will, you will
join the team, or at least look on
and cheer.
John Bassett Moore
the distinguished jurist and re
cently counsellor for the State
Department in strenuous times
has been taking his Christmas
vacation on the Pinehurst links,
in company with the Tin Whistle
brigade.
