A Necessary Law The Audubon Society of North Carolina has prepared a bill to be presented to the next general as sembly of the State which de serves not only the approval, but the righting support of the people, in the" Sandhills in particular. -Its objects are to proper protection and conservation of the birds, game and wild animals, the cre ation of a State Game Commis sion, and for a single uniform State law and jicense instead of the conflicting county seasons and licenses now in vogue. To the many sportsmen who carry at present a Chinese puzzle about with them, comprising the county lines hereabout and the table of dates changing with each border line, this action of the" Audubon Society will appear" not only laudable but essential. It is for the rest of us who wish to see wild life protected for its own sake, and also who have come to realize the tremendous commer cial profit we get from the annual advent of sportsmen to fall upon any doubters and show them the light. Pinehurst, Southern Pines, Car thage, Rockingham, and most of the neighboring towns have a steady income and a large outlook which they get directly from the presence of wealthy men fond of life in the open and the training of dogs and the hunting of turkey and quail. Pine Bluff is in a fair way to become the very center of camp life of fishing and canoe ing and hunting parties in the Carolinas. The income and the as sociations centered there are now a fa'ctor and will become a great deal larger factor, along the en tire reaches of the Lumbee River from here to the sea. But this small and struggling interest in this wide section as a National Playground, has been curtailed and hampered more than any of us suspect by the present diversity of laws and seasons and licenses in the different counties. The writer has personally known several very promising "pros pects" who have left here entire ly for this reason ; and has known of half ajdozen chances for good hunting leases to be lost because of the same reason. Support the bill. The Audubon Society has the confidence of. every man, knows its subject, and its proposals will actually increase our game, our county revenue, or personal revenue, and unify our laws so that we can attract the sportsmen hither.
