THE PINEHURST OUTLOOK THE BIRDS OF PINEHURST Observed by George L. Fordyce During the Advertisers Tournament While at Pinehurst, North Car olina, last week, attending the Tournament of the Winter Golf League of Advertising Interests, J was interested in learning some thing of the bird life in that local ity at this season of the year. The conditions within the lim its of Pinehurst are particularly favorable for birds. The winding drives and footpaths bordered densely with trees and shrubbery make the surroundings strikingly attractive to people, as well as the birds. The long-leaf pine is everywhere about the village. Holly with its red berries like we have at Christmas time is abun dant, and the winter jasmine blooming among the shrubbery gives a spring-like setting to the entire landscape. ' Within seeing and hearing dis tance of the hotel where I was stopping, one could see and hear a great many different kinds of birds. The morning after my ar rival, I was out of doors soon after, daylight and the first bird that I saw was a mockingbird, and, while they were not singing at this time of year, one could easily identify them by their chips and cries. The mocking bird was fairly common every where about the village. A comparison of the bird life at Finehurst . and the vicinity of Youngstown may perhaps be of local interest. under the following classification : Summer Residents. The birds observed at Pinehurst that are Summer residents or breeding hirds with us in the Summer, time, include bluebird, migrant shrike, field sparrow, meadowlark, brown thrasher, marsh hawk, robin, towhee. Spring Migrants. Species that migrate through here in the Springtime on their way to their 1 reeding home in the North, in clude myrtle warbler, white throated sparrow, yellow-bellied sapsucker, hermit thrush, pipet, Canada goose. The only species listed that we do not have in this vicinity were the mockingbird and black vul cher. The Carolina wren some ten years ago was fairly well dis tributed in this locality, as .the Carolina wren is considered non-1 migratory. ' A severe Winter some five or six years ago nearly exterminated them and during the year 1916 we failed to list a Carolina wren in this locality. Of course it is a southern species and Youngstown being almost the northern limit of its range, it was not able to survive he severe Winters of the past few years. During the week I was in Pine hurst I listed 36 different species of "birds in that vicinity. I am satisfied it .would be especially interesting to be at Pinehurst about the first of April, which would probably be about the height of the Spring migration for that locality.
