When it became evident that the most vigorous preparations were being made by Colonel Theodore Roosevelt to organize a division for active service, it was decided by a council presided over by Roger Derby of Drowning Creek to offer the services of the local regiment to him. It is the ambition of all staunch supporters of the old American traditions and ideals the traditions and ideals of demo cracy and liberty to see the American Flag in Flanders be side the French and English in this last battle against savagery and despotism. And it is quite manifest that Theodore Roose velt is both more earnest in this purpose and more certain to carry it out than any other man in this country. So a letter was drafted asking if he could accept a battalion of North Carolinians in his division. This was our answer to the taunt not unfairly directed at the North Carolina representative in Congress, asking you say you were first at Bethel, farthest at Gettysburg and last at Appo oiatox, where are you in 1917 ? Colonel Roosevelt's reply to George Maurice, the head of the committee, is as follows: -Feb. 27, 1917 432 Fourth Ave,. N. Y. City. My Dear Mr. Maurice: I have just heard from Roger Derby that in the event of my being allowed to raise a division, you wish to come in with a batta lion of North Carolinians. There are no men I would rather have with me.. They represent the American type of which I feel particularly proud. I will com municate with you further, if I find I am allowed to raise that division. Sincerely yours, Theodore Roosevelt. Mr. George Maurice, Sec'y, Eagle Springs, N. C. TIN WHISTLE EVENTS Full Program of the Club's Varied Golf Events of the Year Every known and some unknown varie ties of golf tournaments will be played this year by the famous club. The cal endar is dotted with red letter days de voted to mortal combats against bogey, four ball and three ball onsets, match play and medal play, swatfest and flag race, for a wonderful display of trophies donated by the members. The order of events as kindly provided us by the secretary is as follows: March 19 Medal Plat. Fourteen selected holes. Three classes. Prize for each class. March 23 Against Bogey. Prize given by Mr. Leonard Tufts and second and third prizes March 26 Special Tournament for those who have not won a prize this season. Medal Play. April 10 -Medal Play. Twelve selected holes. Six in each nine. Prize given by Mr. James Barber. Burglar Wins Midwinter Trophy It is reported that the great trophy awarded Dwight L. Arm strong of Yale for winning the Midwinter Golf Tournament has been taken vie et armis by a burglar. This theory was ad vanced by the local police. But Sherlock Holmes is at work up on the "Great Championship Golf Mystery" and expects to make some sensational disclos ures showing that the contest for golf prizes does not end on the fairway, and that the golf bug is undermining the ancent order of Cracksman. Bobby Jones the amateur champion of Amer ica, will be in Pinehurst Saturday with Perry Adair to take a few days' fall out of the local talent and take a try at Carter's record of 66 for the champion ship course. Send th OTTTI.OOK to your friends. It tells the storv of the week and saves letter writing. Ask for mailing envelopes.
