w ZimlMVl
A SURPRISE PARTY
ConcUde& from page one)
the Consolation from P. S. MacLaughlin
two and one.
brenman's progress
S. C. Brennan, hailing from Worcester
stayed with some hard matches and some
close play to a victorious conclusion in the
Governor 's Division. The most stubborn
ly contested match in the whole affray
took place in the final round between
Brennan and D. E. Knowlton of Buffalo.
It took twenty-one holes to decide the
contest in Brennan 's favor. Brennan
had put W. T. Barr out by one hole in
the first round, J. H. Turner of Forest
Hills down three and one; and had taken
S. O. Miller, the Englewood Entry, to
task two up, in the semi-finals.
D. F. McMahan, the well known trap
shot of the New York athletic club won
the consolation from Geo. W. Statzell of
Aronimink two up.
THE SECRETARY'S TROPHY.
Meanwhile Schroeder, the Montclair
expert, sailed through the cream of the
local challengers for final honors in the
Secretary's Division. H. P. Hotchkiss
lost to him on the home green in the first
round; J. D. C. Rumsey was the second
and W. H. Gregg of St. Louis, his third
victim. "W. W. Shedden put up a stiff
fight in the final round and lost only by
a single stroke.
H. P. Hotchkiss took his revenge upon
the consolation and polished . off Harry
Waring in the last bracket one up.
E. N. Shaw of. the Toronto Hunt Club,
cinched the Treasurer 's Trophy after a
hard match with E. H. Lowell of Thorney
Lea, and Fred Page, bearing the banner
of the Sandhills came into another trophy
in spectacular style. He and G. A.
Magoon came into the finish simultaneous
with a flood. Nothing daunted Page
tried him a. long putt from off the green
from out of a puddle with his trusty
niblic. Of course he lifted it in a per
fect flight plunk into the soup in the cup.
And there it remained..
' C. H. Billings of Deal vindicated the
shooter 's eye by walking off with the
Captain's trophy, while Fayen gathered
in the consolation. .
, C. E. Beane of the Vesper C. C, won
the Special Division from J. de S. Bosse
of Quebec.
