Because of the war the immemorial birthday cake was eliminated from the ceremony, but the lighted candles, the flowers, the pres ents and the best wishes of his hosts of friends were a feature as always. As his guests at the dinner were Mr. and Mrs. II. P. Hotchkiss of New Haven, Seward Fields of New York, Robert Foote and Noyes D. Clark. A. E. Ather ton and Mr. Such presented the quail for Clark, the price de resistance. Mr. Clark ' is recognized as the Nestor of the golfers of America, and still breaks 100 on the Pinehurst links almost at will. He re tired from business when 72 years old, and not until then did he take up the game. He came to Pinehurst at this juncture and has devoted six months to golf every year since four months here, and two months in the summer in New Hampshire He says that the recreation has kept him in perfect condition. Each hour I purl; each purl take care To drop no stitch, lest I be stung; I count, yes count unto the end , And there a foot is hung. Oh' memories that bless and burn, , Of ravelling out at bitter loss, I drop a purl, yet strive at last to learn . To knit across, sweet art, to knit across. Exchange.
