Another $80 was easily drawn from the gang in the card rooms of the Caro lina of a Bridge evening when Miss Tufts offered a select line of the tro phies of the chase to the highest bidders. The total contributed by the division was $2700. Famom Divine at Plnehnrit Doctor S. A. Watson, rector of the Episcopal Church in Paris, with Mrs. Watson spent a brief period in Pinehurst lately, staying at Mrs. Andrews' Lit tle House and the Pine Crest Inn. They were enjoying a well earned rest, recup erating from exhausting labors in France during the entire period of the war. They told many interesting stories and experiences of the fearful times. The doctor had innumerable tribute medals and orders given him by a grate ful and suffering people for his leader ship in the relief work among the refu gees and the wounded. Mr, S2cCluen, Jtlra lilojd and Tufts Co Over the Top As was to be expected, Pinehurst came across and delivered its share of the Great National War Chest in the cam paign last week. Our quota was $1500. Mrs. J. R. McQueen shouldered the re sponsibility, and the work was done by her and Mrs . Lloyd and Miss Esther Tufts as everyone knows. For if you were in the town and not under the bed or up a tree, one of these saw you person ally and extracted your quota on the spot. A house to house and man to man canvass was the leading feature of the drive. But the side shows were quite productive. The girls were heavily reinforced at the opera house Wednesday in the per son of Eev. T. A. Cheatham, who is a team in himself. The usual resigna ion indulged in when a good show is held up for a War spiel rapidly gave way to genuine pleasure and anticipa tion when the crowd discovered that the Eector was on the bill. In his usual forceful and simple manner he drove home the necessity of the hour to such purpose that Miss Esther Tufts and Miss Alice Page raked in two hats full of change on the spot, aggregating $79.98, A. Valuable Acquisition The principal and most profitable busi ness in this section of the country is getting to be the raising of commercial peaches. Shipments have increased from ten cars in 1910 to nearly 200 cars last harvest. And next year it is estimated there will be nearer 400 cars. The prices on crates have been steadily mounting, until these last two years an average of $3 net has not been unusual. For this reason the section welcomes with the greater cordiality the arrival of Professor W. N. Hutt as a perma nent acquisition to its councils. He has for some years been the head of the Horticultural Bureau of the North Caro lina Department of Agriculture, and pres ident of the National Horticultural So ciety. He has taught us all we know of fruit culture. And so the interest added to the greeting that he and Mrs. Hutt were certain to receive from their many friends here. Mr. Hutt has taken charge o fthe operation of the Carolina, Derby and Marston orchards. Planning- an Orchard S. B. Chapin is about to join the legion of fruit growers about Pinehurst. He is clearing the big ridge between here and Aberdeen for peaches. It is said to be one of the best locations in the sec tion. Surprised "The Eomans had small regard for human life in their amusements. ' ' "Yes," answered the man of violent prejudices.
