Ebb Weir 110 27 83 4 down Mrs. Hurd's Medal Xorth and South Champion Wins the Qualifying Round of the St. Valentine Tournament for Women Mrs. Dorothy Campbell Hurd of Pittsburgh, North and South golf champion and former holder of tho national and British titles, won the medal in the qualifying round of the St. Valentine tournament for women on Wednesday last. She covered the No. 1 course in 48, 45 93 and led the field by a margin of three strokes. Miss Eleanor T. Chandler of Phila delphia and. Mrs. F. Talford Keating of the Agawam Hunt Club gave Mrs. Hurd a hard fight. The. Pittsbu.. golfer played the first eight holes in even fives and led Miss Chandler and Mrs. Keating by two strokes at that time. Then Mrs. Hurd slipped up on the ninth losing a stroke to each oi her two rivals and lost another stroke at the eleventh, where Mrs. Keating went down in par 3 and Miss Chandler sank a long putt for a brilliant 2. At that stage of the proceedings Mrs. Hurd and Mrs. Keating were tied at 57 for eleven holes and Miss Chandler stood at 56. , The Pittsburgh player picked up a stroke on the two other leaders at the twelfth, gained two more by a par 4W the fourteenth and finished the last nine holes in 45 to 47 for Mrs. Keating and Miss Chandler, which gave her a lead of three strokes on each. Abden Runs His Last Race The nine-furlong flat race, the big event of last Wednesday's meeting of the Jockey Club, was won in 1:59 4-5 by Nat Hurd's Porin, with Diamond up. Marshall Hall's Ray-O-Light, ridden by Houston finished a close sec ond. Hayden Preston's Abden, who has won many a race at Pinehurst this season, had a bad fall near the end of the long race and was injured so seri ously that the gallant racer had to be shot. George Roach, entered by Miss Es ther Tufts and ridden by Diamond, took a big field into camp in the seven furlong flat, and winning in 1:33 1-5. Hurd's Cliff Field, with Burns up, was second.
