FAGE EIGHT 1920 Shooting Season Begins I By Peter P. Carney TEE..P1NEHUBST OUTLOOK The opening gini of every shooting season for the past 21 years has been fired at Pinehurst, that delightful resort in North Carolina. There will be no exception to the rule in the year so close to hand. The thirteenth midwinter handicap trap shooting tournament of the Pinehurst Country Club Avill take place on Jan uary 19, 20, 21, 22, 23 and 24—and we have no fear in saying right out loud that this Pinehurst tournament will overshadow all others that have been shot there. Starting out Avith 39 entries the Pine hurst feature has grown with the inter est in clay target shooting and last January the entries totaled 181. While the program is based on 125 shooters we are inclined to believe that the entrants will be nearer 250. Pinehurst is not only a splendid place, but it is a won- 1920 program will be about the same as in other years with the East vs. the V/est as tlie headline shoot. The divid ing line between the sections will be the Western Boundry of Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennesseo, and Mississippi. The five highest scores of the shooters of the two sections will be taken on the 450 targets at 16 yards, and the num bers of the winning team will be aAvard- el with trophies. The Pinehurst introductory will be shot on the 20th; the Pinehurst Over ture on the 21st; the Pinehurst Prelim inary Handicap on the 22nd and the IMnehurst Midwinter Handicap on the 23rd. This is the blue ribbon event of the shoot, and the- winner pulls down trophies estimated at $700. The handi cap conunittee will be chosen from the shooters in attendance. m AT THE ANNUAL MIDWINTER HANDICAP derful spot for trapshooting and the Pinehurst Country Club makes life worth living for all those who attend. Not only that but the valuation of the trophy list is more than $10,000 which gives one an idea of the kind of a shoot it is. We don’t know of any other sport competition in the United States in recent years where the prizes have totaled any amount near this sum. $1,000 will be divided among the high average shooters in the four classes on the program, which is the greatest amount of average money ever offered in any shoot. The- Pinehurst tournament is not run wifh the idea of making money, but to show every one Avho comes a fine tourna ment and a week’s vacation in an en joyable place, and the continued in crease in the number of entries proves that the club knows its business. The All told 925 targets will be thrown— if a shooter goes all the way through, 625 being from 16 yards. There will be separate average prizes on the 450 reg istered targets, 500, 600, 700, 800 and tlie complete program Winners of Pinehurst Handicaps of other Years Year Shooter En tries Score Yds. 1908 C.
