Five of the starters broke 80 and nothing worse than 90 qualified in the first sixteen, there being a play-off of three players for the last two places in the division. The longest match of the tournament was played in the first round of the second sixteen, in which H. E. Porter de feated P. B. O'Brien at the 22nd hole. CLUB NOTES The usual Sunday afternoon exhibi tion match on January second was won by Emmet French of Youngstown, and Willie Wilson of York Harbor, who de feated Walter Howe of Tatnuck and Charles Motherscle of Pinehurst by one up. French and Wilson had a best ball of 68, to 69 for Howe and Mothersele. French's 70 was the best individual score, with Howe second best at 72. Howe had a remarkable ont nine, being but 33 to the turn. His out card read: 543 442 53333. Howe and Mothersele were one up at the turn. French won the eleventh with a birdie three and Mothersele the 14th with a birdie three. French and Wilson won the 14th and 16th holes when they obtained the par figures of 3 and 4 against 4 and 5 by Howe and Mothersele.. Harold Callaway of the Park Club, Buffalo, who will be in the Club shop this year, is one of the most promising young professionals to play here in a long time. He has been shooting some excellent golf recently, and on Sunday last he scored a 71 over the champion ship course. His card was: Out 444 453 53335 In 455 433 53436 Callaway is professional at the Buf falo Club, and he, with his brother Lionel, who is also connected with the golf plant here this season, had the honor of playing against Harry Vardon and Ted Ray, when the Englishmen were here last summer.
