Advice given on all matters per taining to Horticulture.- HOW 1921 CHAMPIONSHIPS WERE OBTAINED Oratory Chief Factor By Sandy McNiblick Those dissenting with the choice of arenas for the three major golf champi onships in America this year point to the fact that many star eastern golfers will be missing from the amateur in. St Louis, that Columbia may not prove the best course that could have been select ed for such an event as the open will be this year, and that Hollywood, from the championship tees, will prove too long or difficult for the women. On the face of it, however, the major ity of clubs approve of the choice of links, for their delegates voted for these courses. And in each case it was oratory that decided the issue, oratory of a nature that brightened up the whole meeting of the U. S. G. A. where the voting was held, oratory of a nature that would have made even a Cicero cross his hocks and hand over the toga. When the ora tors at the U. S. G. A. meeting got through there just plain wasn t any more to be said. Came the argument for the amateur. B. F. Kinelly, of the Flossmoor Country Club,' took the floor, cleared his throat, and planted two fingers in the bosom of his shirt "I note," he began, receding his chin well back in his collar, "that due con sideration shall be given to accessibility, accommodations, and condition of the course. "Flossmoor is but 25 miles from Chi cago which is situated in the very heart of these United States. Two of the greatest boulevards in America cut Flossmoor in twain for motorists while the Illinois Central could dump thou sands at our portals, with a train every half hour. But every official of the Illi nois Central, from the president on down, is a member of Flossmoor and we are assured that a train will be run every half minute if necessary. There are twenty-five trunk lines to Chicago, and a train a minute.' ' Mr. Kinelly cast his eyes heavenward as he noted in raptured strains the mar vellous summer climate of Chicago in Au gust and September. "Chicago has the most wonderful parks and boulevards in the world, ' ' went on Mr. Kinelly impressively. "It has the finest shopping districts in the uni verse, its theatres and operas are un surpassed. For the God-fearing golfers there are more than 1200 churches in Chicago. ' ' Here followed definite references to bonded-warehouses, Peoria, and Milwau kee amid a din of applause. 'We have a 6500-yard course which we don't have to get in shape. It's always in shape. Even its trees are in shape, s. could tell you of the beatific qualities of our sleeping quarters and things, but as I take my seat I assure you that not only does Flossmoor invite you but the United Golf Clubs of Chicago invite you. There are more golfers in the city of Chicago than any other city in the world. We have never had the champi onship. Let me quote from O 'Henry and Kipling." He did. "So in closing, gentlemen, simply let me state that a population of 55,000,000 souls in and near Chicago, invites you to Chicago, begs you on bended knees, im plores you, to play the next amateur golf championship of America at Flossmoor." But wait. Through a storm of ap plause for the speaker, Warring Hough, St. Louis Country Club, begs to be heard. The tumult wanes. - "The amateur championship," he be gan in silvery and rising tones, "has been held 16 times in New York and vi cinity, three times in outlying districts, IUf. U. 8. Pat. Off. "We have 32 trunk lines in St. Louis. Our boulevards make Chicago's look like country roads. I bow in reverence to the grandeur of our parks, our churches, our theatres, our shops. Then the superb climate, and no mosquitoes! ' ' Ah, the rolling hills of St. Louis, th? sweet tint of spring on the zephyrs waft ing over the course, the scenery surpass ing Switzerland in all its magnificence, the gorgeousness of our crimson sunsets, the verdant greensward, the birds war bling sweetly in the trees, the wondrous beauty of our women, who am I to de scribe with my poor words these glories to you? "Hear us this once. Make us humbly joyful with your favor. Give us your classic ! " And they did. t Came the bids for the open. Dr Wal ter S. Harban spoke along the lines of the above for Columbia. The others talked of their courses mainly and lost. As for Hollywood, well the delegates withdrew from the bidding- for the open with these simple words: 1 ' We withdraw from the open and bow to the ladies. They want to play our course. " These few words swept the bidders for the women's championship to one side like a bowling ball right down the alley. The ladies wanted Hollywood. They got it. "Vanished Joy" He who would taste life's happiness Must sip the cup when it is passed. He must not wait some future date The present sweetness cannot last. Age unto youth cannot return, The tides of pleasure cannot wait. Be glad today, if now you may, Tomorrow it may be too late. (Continued from Page Four) In the event an amateur golfer, who has made a one or two on any of these holes, should read this record and not find his name, it is because he failed to have it registered at the club. A num ber of members of the Tin Whistles think that more one's and two's have been made, but the only scores reported are those shown on the official list. THOS. H. LOGAN CO., HUDSON, MASS.
