T. Currie. The post office will handle the sale of the new securities, Mr. Currie said, precisely as in the past. "The 1921 series," said the post master," consists of five forms of sav ings securities, two of which have never before been offered. The new forms are a $1 Treasury Savings Stamp and a $25 Treasury Savings Certificate. The three other forms, which have proved so popu larthe 25 cent Thrift Stamp, the $5 War Savings Stamp and the $100 and $1,000 Savings Certificates complete the series. "It is the plan of the Treasury De partment to encourage regular habits of saving and investment in government securities," the postmaster said; "and in order to lend stimulus to the savings movement it has put out the two new is sues the $1 and the $25 securities. "A feature of the $1 Treasury Sav ings. Stamp is that four of them, plus a small additional amount in cash, can be exchanged for a full interest-bearing $5 War Savings Stamp. The additional cash amount required is only 12 cents in January. Next mouth it will be 13 cents; in March it will be 14 cents, and so on. "Of course all War Savings Stamps and Treasury Savings Stamps and Cer tificates will be redeemed in cash when ever the owners want the money, and the government," the postmaster explained, "will not only pay back the full pur chase price but all the interest earned. The rate of interest, based on the five year period, for which the securities are issued, is 4 per cent, compounded four times a year." devils, dingling money. The fear of tax ation is driving them Into matrimony, and if any babies are to be bonussed, they intend to be the fathers of them, rather than the bachelor supporters of them. At the present rate of marriage, when the time comes for the Commissions of Inland Revenue to levy their tax on Bachelors, it is more than likely the pa pers will be returned marked: "There ain't no such things." TAR HEEL POULTRY CLUBS WIN HONORS AT MADISON SQUARE GARDEN SEEK MATRIMONY TO AVOID TAX Tar Heel boys and girls captured three prizes on their poultry club exhibit at the Madison Square Garden Poultry Show, New York City. The Club birds were entered in open competition with the professional breeders of the United States, Canada and England, and North Carolina was the only state represented by a club exhibit. In black Langshan hens the North Carolina entry took second place with a bird pronounced one of the most wonder fully colored hens ever seen. It failed to place first because a few tail feathers were bent and broken during the, long trip north. Among the Buff Plymouth Rock cock erels, with 17 entries, a N. C. club bird took third prize; while in the pullet class a club bird took fifth among 15 entries. The Buff Plymouth pullet class was one of the "hottest" classes the Madison Square show has seen in years, accord ing to A. G. Oliver, in charge of poul try clubs in North Carolina. Throughout the show a large display cage containing ten Rhode Island Red cockerels bearing a label "North Caro lina Boys' and Girls' Poultry Clubs" oc cupied the center of the Garden, next to the big fountain and fancy waterfowl exhibit. The "reds" attracted much attention and comment and the ten birds were sold at the close of the show to ten different breeders. The new Parisian tax on bachelors in order to provide bonuses for babies is having its effect in London. Bachelors are ceasing to brag about their happy state. At the beginning of, 1920 a band of bachelors, gathered together and - form ed the Leap Year's Bachelor Club. They pledged themselves to stand together and laid down the most stringent rules, which included n taboo on theatre visiting in the company of a representative of the menacing sex. The founder. of the club was the first to fall. After that they all caved in and stock taking on New Year's proved that only one member was left of the gallant throng of sworn celibates. And now, in the early days of 1921 comes this distant rumbling from France. A tax on bachelors in: order to bonus other men's babies! i "Great Heavens!" they mutter, "this thing might get to England any . day now." ' ' There is no talk of forming a 1921 Bachelors' Club. In such circumstances, unity, instead of making them strong, only makes them conspicuous. Bachelors no longer pose as irresponsible, care-free AT THE GUN CLUB There will be a weekly handicap target tournament at the Gun Club every Tues day if there are five entries or more, for a sterling trophy, Ideal Leggett traps. Bird handicap. The handicap is limited to twenty birds. A sterling trophy will be given for the four best scores made oach month during the months of Janu ary, February and March, in the weekly handicap tournaments from 16 yards at 400 targets. Annie Oakley will instruct ladies in the art of shooting, free of charge. Weekly prizes will be given t the ladies making the highest score at the rifle range. An exchange says that tyrolozonic germs in ice cream may be rendered per fectly harmless by boiling it and serving it hot. V V V An expert has invented a golf club that, will prevent a slice or a hook. But he makes no mention of having invented a golf ball that will trickle Into a cup as buoyantly as it trickles into the heel print of a bunker.
