MARCH 10, 1921 PAGE 11 SAND HILLS POLO CLUB With beautiful weather prevailing and before a large crowd, a very evenly con tested polo match took place on Sunday afternoon between teams headed by Mr. j; A. Tuckerman and Lt.-Col. R. C. Foy, in which the former team won. by 4 goals to 1. The line-up was as follows: 1. Major J. Hatch and Li. W. M. Gar rison alternating. 2. Mr. J. A. Tuckerman. 3. Major E. L. Gruber. Back Mr. D. White. 1. Capt. Gowgill and Mr. Charles Crock er alternating. 2. Lt.-Col. R. C. Foy. 3. Capt. A. Loftus Bryan. Back Major F. W. Bowley. Goals were scored by Colonel Foy, Mr. Tuckerman, Mr. White and Major Hatch. The game was remarkable for the fast play on each side. One well-known visi tor was heard to remark that polo here had emerged triumphantly through its initial stages and had come to stay, v v v The local Polo tournament will take place early in April. On Sunday, March 13, there will be another match with the officers of Camp Bragg, v v v In view of the rapid strides being made by polo throughout the country it is thought appropriate to describe a few details of the game. The game origi nated in India in the dim ages. Four players to each team. Each player has a handicap registered with the Polo Asso ciation. A goal is scored when the ball passes through the goal posts at the ends of the grounds. Players of one side try to interfere with players of the other side to prevent them from getting possession of the ball. This is called " Riding Off." The game is a very scientific one. Combination between the players of each team being essential, and not merely in dividual and indiscriminate hitting the ball in the direction of the opponent's goal. There are eight chuckers (periods) of seven and one-half minutes each. Three-minute intervals, are allowed be tween each chucker for the players to change ponies. The time-keeper sounds a bell as a signal to begin and end chuck ers. The ball, however, is not in or out of play until the umpire blows his whis tle. There are various fouls possible, among the worst being ' 'crossing" and "dangerous riding." The umpire sets the penalties. TIN WHISTLES BATTLE WITH PAR Eighty-four Tin Whistles, a record field, took part in the annual four-ball, best-ball contest versus par on the Num ber 2 course on Friday last, each four some playing as partners, at club handi caps, against the par figures of the course. The first set of prizes went to L. A. Hamilton of Garden City, F. T. Keating of Spring Lake, Prestley McLaughlin of Ekwanok, and A. S. Higgins of St. An drews, who led the field by a margin of three holes despite their relatively low average handicap and who finished 9 up on par. 1 ' Hamilton went around in 77, Keating in 78, and the other two partners helped out the weak spots so effectually that each of the eighteen holes was played in par or better. The quartette's best-ball for the round was 67 gross and 61 net. The struggle for the second prizes re sulted in a tie, at 6 up, between W. T. Barr of Dering Harbor, J. D.C Rum sey of Brooklyn, Richard Tufts of Pine hurst and George T. Dunlap of Canoe Brook, on the one hand, and A. B. Ash forth of Garden City, B. V. Covert of Lockport, A. M. Reed of Ekwanok and G. M. Howard of Halifax, on the other. The Pine Crest Inn (Under new management) OPEN OCTOBER TO JUNE Modern in every appointment PRIVATE BATHS STEAM HEAT EXCELLENT CUISINE Donald J. Ross and W. J. Mr. Hoyt is making his first visit to Pine hurst, but he had not been here 24 hours before he had taken a number of the reg ulars into camp.
