TOP DRESSING PUTTING GREENS
The old time compost pile made with
manure, sand and sou is becoming ob
solete and is being discarded by the
majority of Golf Clubs m favor of Pre
pared Top Dressing which comes ready
to apply. It takes two years before a
compost pile is fit for use. It is costly,
even when all the ingredients are at hand,
and absolutely impracticable if they
must be purchased. The labor of turning
and screening is also expensive. The
automobile has reduced the quantity and
increased the price of manure. Manure
is a carrier of disease germs and weed
seeds. Shavings for bedding and strong
disinfectants in stables, mean death to
grass.
The Alphano Humus Company's corps
of experts have made an intense study
of this problem for many years. The
result is, their Prepared Top Dressing
for Putting Greens a scientifically bal
anced grass food, inoculated with bil
lions of Nitrogen gathering bacteria. It
is delivered in the right condition for top
dressing greens, just as unloaded from
car. The finest Putting Greens in Amer
ica today owe their perfection to Pre
pared Top Dressing periodically applied
with no interference with the play.
To be always positive that the grass
seeds best adapted to the locality and
climatic conditions are sown in connection
with Prepared Top Dressing, to insure re
sults certain of satisfaction, The Alphano
Humus Company has effected selling ar
rangements with the largest grass seed
exporters and importers of the world and
can furnish grass seeds of the proper
variety, of guaranteed purity and highest
germination tests.

GIANTS LOOK LIKE BEST
BET IN NATIONAL
LEAGUE RACE
(United Press Staff Correspondent) "
New York. Since 1913, when Jawn
J. McGraw copped his third pennant in
a row, no National League manager has
headed a winner twice consecutively.
Uncle Wilbert Robinson can do a lot
of things with ball players, but there is
not enough around his Brooklyn Club to
justify the belief that he will break the
precedent.
True, he has the same club, man for
man, excepting Rube Marquard, that
won the 1920 honors, but while he has
stood pat on his team, other managers
have been adding strength during the
off seasota.
Picking winners on the diamond is
just about dependable as picking them
on the turf a hit once in a while is a
good average.
The same Uncle Wilbert Robinson
probably was thinking of this recently
Avhen he said:
' 'You go ahead and dope out the pen
nant race, I prefer to play it."
However, in fifty per cent, of the
cases, baseball runs true to form. Last
year, the National League race went
against the dope but the American
League followed it almost to a line.
The National League, of course, can
bt divided into two groups, contend
ers and non-contenders.
Only three clubs at this early date ap
pear to be in the first class, Brooklyn,
New York and Pittsburgh.
Of that trio New York looks to be
best with the Pirates second and the
Robins third.
The Giants ought to win the pennant.
If Gohlie Rapp makes good for the in
field and McGraw is able to land a more
reliable centerfielder than Benny Kauff
or King, he ought to walk away with
the pennant.
After a slump until midsummer, with
the pitchers out of condition and a frag
ile infield, the Giants chased the Robins
clear to the wire last year.
The club is stronger this year, should
start stronger and finish stronger.
Rabbitt Maranville will make a pen
nant contender out of the Pittsburgh
Pirates. George Gibson sacrificed some
batting strength and some powerful out
field talent to get him but there is
plenty left. The Pirates look awfully
good for the race, but not enough to
nose out the Giants.
Brooklyn has the best pitching staff
in the major league. It may even be
stronger with Reuther in the fold, but
the club is no better than it was last
year and everyone excepting the resi
dents of Flatbush admit that the Eb
berts crowd was rather lucky last year.
The Cincinnati Reds appear to be
shot. Pat Moran wrecked his club to
get rid of some disturbers. With a re
cruit, Bohne, on second base and the
light hitting Crane in right field, the
club will not be as strong as it was last
year. There may be better morale on
the club with Reuther, Ring, Rath and
Neale gone, but morale will not go it
alone.
