APBIL 7, mi PAGE 11 ADAIR AND MERRIMAN TIE IN QUALIFYING ROUND OF NORTH AND SOUTH More than 200-golfers started off on Monday of this week in the qualifying round of the twenty-first annual North and South Amateur Championship and were led by Perry Adair, ,the young Atlanta expert, and B. P. Merriman, Connecticut State champion, who tied at 155 for the 36 holes. Adair won the medal in this event last year but his stock took a slump when he went around in well over 80 in an exhi bition match with Joseph Kirkwood and others the day before the North and South started, and it tumbled still further when he started his qualifying round by tak ing even 5's for the first five holes. But at that juncture Perry seemed to have got rid of about all the second-rate golf in his locker. He played the remaining four holes of the outward journey in 3-5-3-3, reached the turn in 39, and came home flying in 34 for a total of 73 for the first 18-hole round. Merriman, on the other hand, recently went over the championship course in 74 but wound up his first day in the qualify ing round with an 80 and started the second day's play seven strokes from the top. It was then he hit his stride and, although playing in the face of a strong wind, turned in a 75 which was 4 strokes hotter than any other score of the day and placed him in a tie with Adair who turned in an 82. Gardiner White of Nassau, who sold as favorite in the pool the night before, went around in 78-78, and tied at 156, with Lou Hamilton, Garden City, for third place. Hamilton stood second at the end of the first day's play with a 76 but took an 80 on the last round. F. C. Newton, runner-up to Parker Whittemore in the Spring tournament, went around in 79-82161. Only 12 strokes separated the first and last man in the championship sixteen. Nine di visions qualified and will continue at matchplay throughout the week.
