Notes of the Week
" When Spring unlocks the flowers to
paint the laughing soil," nowhere does
sll0 work more graciously than in the
Sand Hills. That this fact is becoming
better known each year is evidenced by
the increasing number of guests who
prolong their stay to watch Spring per
form her miracles in this sandy soil.
Nor do these folk wait in idleness, for
each waking hour is punctuated by activ
ity on the golf links, in the saddle, at
the Gun Club and in many charming
homes in the village, all contributing
their share toward the atmosphere of joy
and recreation that one breathes in Pine
liiust. One needs only to step into the Club
of an afternoon, where there is ever a
merry throng dancing and teaing, to
fully understand the reason for its pop
ularity. Such good things are served foi'
zestful appetites, while the Country Club
Orchestra plays music that would win
the heart and heels of a stone image.
Last Aveek's list of entertainers at the
Club is long and imposing, but we'll let
you have a peek at it. During the week
Mrs. C. C. Hoyt of Boston gave a tea
for a party of friends, among whom we
recognized Mrs. Henry Whitin of Whit
insville, Mass., Mr. and Mrs. Smith and
their daughter, Mrs. Arthur Delano of
New Bedford, Mass. Mrs. Will Blue
and Mrs. Jay V. Hall were hostesses at
tea, to which came the Nat Kurds, the
Fred Fages, Mrs. Lee Page, Ned Beall,
Mrs. Ilarcourt Black and Mrs. W. C.
Mudgett of Southern Pines, Mrs. Ed.
Schofield, and F. C. Newton, who is
just up from Florida. One afternoon
Arthur Yates was host at an exceedingly
large party, from which we missed none
of his coterie of vivacious friends, and
another day Mr. Harold Buckminster of
Winchester, Mass., was host at an equally
large party made up of about the same
folk. Arthur Sweetser of Switzerland,
who has received considerable attention
during his visit here, has in turn enter
tained much at the Club where lie has
been host at a number of merry little
parties. Jack Latting entertained one
afternoon, with the Nat Hurds, Mrs. Leo
F. F. Wanner and her mother, Mrs. Bar
mmi, and Mrs. Winfield Fuller among
his guests. Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Page
gave a jolly little tea-party one evening,
as did Mr. II. P. Wells of Jersey City,
and Mrs. Mudgett and Mrs. Wilson of
Southern Pines.
Saturday afternoon Mr. and Mrs.
Bradford Lewis entertained a party of
friends at tea. Mrs. Walter Stall of
Brockton, was hostess at a little party
where Mrs. Nicholson of New Bedford
was a guest; Mrs. II. B. Swoope was
hostess at another table where she
brought some friends from the races;
Frank Hale of Boston, and Miss
L'mise Elkins each entertained a party
tf twelve; Mrs. Whitcomb of Plainfield,
c,'tertained a party of twelve friends,

for her house-guest, Mrs. P. R. Butten
heim of New York, a party of twelve,
among whom were Mrs. Warren Horton
of New York, Mrs. F. B. Lovejoy of
Montclair, Mrs. Washburn of Sauger
ties, Mrs. Hathaway of Montreal, and
Mrs. Russell Wiggins and Miss Wiggins
of Middletown, N. Y. Monday after
noon at the Club, Mrs. F. B. Lovejoy of
Montclair, entertained a party of
friends, as did Mrs. Leon Abbott of New
York, Mr. C. D. Whittesley, Mrs. Rob
ertson, and Mrs. P. R. Buttenheim of
New York. Miss Susanne Wiggins of
Middletown, entertained a party of ten
with Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Cross, Mr. and
Mrs. Warren Horton, Mr. and Mrs. But
tenheim, Miss Mollie Snyder, and Mr.
B. E. Kile as her guests.
Last Friday night the Country Club
was again the well-arranged and decor
ated stage, the scene being a dinner
dance given by Mr. and Mrs. Will Blue
of Aberdeen. ' A dinner, of the kind for
which the Club is famous, was served at
8:30, after which dancing was in order
until well into the morning. The guests
are all familiar figures in the smart so
cial doings of the toAvn and included the
Nat Hurds, the Ralph Pages, the Rich
ard Loverings, the Lee Pages, and their
house guest, the Fred Pages, "Buck"
Blue, the Ilarcourt Blacks, J. V. Hurd,
Mrs. Winfield Fuller, the Ned Scofields,
Capt. Bryan, Dr. and Mrs . Mudgett, and
the Arthur Newcombs.
Pinehurst is doubly blessed with good
fortune this week in being able to wel
come for a brief visit two of the best
known poets of the day, Clinton Scollard
and Edgar Guest. We trust both these
gentlemen will find in abundance the rest
and relaxation for which they came.
Mrs. Golsan and daughter of Rich
mond, Va., are spending the month with
Mrs. Golsan 's parents, Mr. and Mrs.
S. Y. Ramage, at their cottage, The
Deodars.
A large and interesting bridge-party
was given at the Carolina one evening
last week. In the ball room were twenty
tables about Avhich were gathered many
enthusiastic folk on auction bent. The
prizes, given by the management, were
won by Mrs. Hugo Scherer of Detroit,
Mrs. A. S. Gilman of Cleveland, Mrs.
A. II . England, of Philadelphia, Messrs.
W. A. Hogan of Brockton, Charles Bige
low of New York, and Ellis Gordon of
Brookline.
There was much to interest the on
looker at the races last Saturday, amuse
ment being added by the specialties in
which the guests participate with en
thusiasm. A large field of riders made
the events more than usually competitive.
Mrs. Leo F. F. Wanner, Miss Marie
Fallon of Boston, Miss Dorothy Barber,
Miss Grace Pierson of New York, Mrs.
Ralph Hornblower of Boston, H. II .
BELLEVUE
STRATFORD Philadelphia
When the discriminating traveler
thinks "Philadelphia" instinctively
comes the mental echo "Bellevue
Stratford." It is the personifica
tion of what a guest has a right to
expect in a great hotel of to-day.
